I am considering whether, or not to buy an infrared sauna and would be

pleased to hear any experiences, both good and bad, members may have

had with them. Also any experience of different types - those you have

to sit down in before closing and full-height ones.

I'm interested in this information as well. I've been looking around and found this on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2006-SAUNA-PRO-INFRARED-SAUNA-SAUNAS-1-PERSON_W0QQitemZ4405380287QQcategoryZ42240QQcmdZViewItem), which seems more than adequate. Things I do not know about is if the particular wood material becomes toxic at a heated rate, etc.

Please let me know what you find out privately as well, Val.

Thanks,

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Unfortunately this is US only and I am in the United Kingdom. I should ask them what it is made of.

Hello Val/Cindy

I hope that I can be of some help. I have been looking at the ‘far Infrared saunas’ now for eleven months! I have visited the states to look at the different manufacturers and Canada, and have purchased a sauna though Nordic (a good quality name within this country) that has come from Australia.

What have I found? Well from all the manufacturers I have found two or three in the states and one in Canada that I would say have a high quality in build, however you then have to think about the cost and the added cost with shipping and of course there not around the corner should you have any problems and or need to use your warranty. All that come from Japan etc are cheap to look at and the quality isn’t really there and the sound system is poor which if you want sound therapy you need high quality.

Infrared has been used with excellent results in Japan and very big in the states etc but has been used for treatment of many aliments in Europe now in Germany for nearly eighty years!

The different types of heaters: The infrared lamps (the red lights or red tubes) can damage (burn) the skin if you don’t move around with-in the sauna, shame if you fall asleep!

There are tubes filled with volcanic sand but they are less efficient than the ceramic emitters.

99% of the saunas that I have found in the UK though suppliers are, well good but still more of a gimmick if you think you’re going to get exactly what there claiming. For example nearly all the saunas ive seen had the same problems, in the sauna that I have, I have made a few changes the colour therapy unit: the use of coloured Perspex, well you can only really get true colour therapy using acetates or coloured glass manufactured for the stage lighting industry, also SAD can only be helped by using a true white light not just a tube behind a white piece of plastic, I had a professional car stereo installer put my sound system in. I have replaced my aluminium reflectors with stainless steel (aluminium is toxic) and changed the angle of

them, the ceramic heaters (Infrared goes in a straight line so no point in not being angled to where your sitting) for my girlfriend I have changed the seat with wider slats and installed ceramic heaters under the seat to get at, well underneath (no point in saying it can help with your bum and thighs if its not getting to those parts!) installed temperature controlled air intake with pollen filter and an extractor fan to control the temperature to keep it at 48°C nice and comfortable and not a worry for any one that suffers with heart problems. (No need for air purifiers infrared kills bacteria etc). If you are chemical sensitive, order a sauna in white European spruce not the cedar as contains toxic oils also check for plywood in the construction as it contains toxic glues. Sorry to sound so picky but if you’re buying something for your health i.e. Hypothermic (sweat therapy) for detoxing your body then you need to think about the toxic problems with in the sauna its-self (on this

subject it answers the question about the small cheap portable saunas that you sit in with your head sticking out) at the exhibition in the states they all said they were rubbish, but in a more factorial answer you cant achieve sweat therapy as your losing all the heat from your head!

The biggest problem I have found is the marketing! A lot of the statements about the products are not only misleading but are dam right untrue which is a shame when it’s such a good product in the first place that works and has been and is used a great deal for the medical industry (we use it for premature babies in incubators to keep them warm).

I will stop there but if there are any questions you have just let me know am sure I could probably answer them. And as my mum said you might as well build your own as you’re so meticulous with you’re the one you brought and have changed so much, so I will and I hope to be ready for manufacture Feb of next year, I just want to make sure that everything does what it should and it is good for your health and not just a gimmick. The website for more information is under construction but I hope this will be ready by Nov www.doctordetox.co.uk but until then as I said I will always try to answer any questions take care.

Kind regards

Hi Nick,

I have been looking at the range by zoki uk - they supply prisons in this country & recently fitted one for Simon Cowell (the X factor). I must admit that I am not sure about the SAD light which is available in it, but if they are prepared to include it without charging, I guess it may help a little on dark winter mornings.

Have you looked at this brand? Pls say quickly as I was thinking or ordering today???

Hello Val

Yes I have, and his SAD lights I believe are correct not sure about his colour therapy, a lot of the competition say that his saunas aren’t very good but I do believe they are! And it’s just the thing these people say and when I questioned why there answers were just to do with the look of the product internally.

I have approached the owner to supply this product in the south but he doesn’t want to so good luck and just check the emitters do point towards you and if you want to use the product for bum and thighs that there are emitters pointing from underneath.

Good health

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your reply. The rep I spoke to was not impressed with the colour therapy either. I have elected to have the SAD panel instead, which I am sure may help a little in dark winter days, and has a separate switch so that I can not use it in the evenings.

I guess for bum & thighs the under seat rays will not go through the seat & so I should stand up for this. I seem to remember reading somewhere that men should not have their testes receiving the "heat" - do you agree with this? Just thought I would ask this point as my husband will also use the sauna.

Their saunas were a lot cheaper than some of the ones I got information about, and also not so cramped. They are installing it including the SAD panel & the aromatherapy diffuser for £1400 for the HW1 - 2 person one.

Hello Val

Glad to hear you’ve got the sauna sorted out and yes a good thing to have the SAD light box for those winter blues depending on the light panel you could always get a coloured acetate to go over it for colour therapy, one of the best places ive found for this sort of thing is www.colourtherapyhealing.com and the lovely lady there is also Valerie!

On the mater with your husband I have read quite a lot about the use of heat on the testes for birth control so perhaps he should protect them if you’re trying for children? But remember infrared goes in a straight line so unless he’s well in the position to the emitters. However the low temperatures (108’F/ 42’C) recommended for hyperthermia should not affect male fertility. Dr. Voegel from Switzerland found that higher temperatures can result in temporary male sterilization (using a standard high temperature sauna for 45 mins for three weeks would result in temporary sterility for six months) so as your not getting your sauna to these temperatures I wouldn’t worry.

Do remember though iam not a doctor and should you need any advice you should always talk to your GP.

Let me know how you get on with your new purchase and good health.

Kind regards Nick Gander

Ps I have attached a helpful list when using a sauna valerieforster <ambney1 wrote:

Hi Nick,

Thanks for that. Sauna fitted yesterday and so I have only had time to use it once. I shall look into the colour acetates and their uses. No, our child producing days are long gone, but it is very interesting to hear about the possible effects of a hot sauna - I shall tell my 29 year old son although he is unattached at the moment.
