OLIVE OIL, SAGE APPEAR TO DECREASE LUNG CANCER RISK. A study conducted in

Italy this year has discovered that olive oil and sage were " associated

with decreased lung cancer risk. " Although other foods in a Mediterranean

diet--carrots, tomatoes, and white meat--showed initial promise, they did

not stand up to a multivariate analysis (a method that allows simultaneous

study of two or more dependent variables.)

TWO INGREDIENTS FOUND THAT MAY HELP US LIVE LONGER. Scientists have found

two ingredients--one in red wine and another in olive oil--that may help

us to live longer. They are resveratrol and quercetin, key ingredients

that can significantly increase the lifespan of yeast, which share many

genes with humans.

STUDY FINDS FISH OIL BLUNTS STRESS HORMONES. In a small study conducted

in France, Fish oil has been found to blunt stress hormones, which

increase heart rate and blood pressure,. Researchers gave seven healthy

men 7.2 grams a day of fish oil for three weeks to achieve the results.

THREE ANTIOXIDANTS SHOW PROMISE IN ADVANCED CANCER PATIENTS. Three

antioxidants--alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and

amifostine (AMI)--have shown " evidence of their potential role in the

functional restoration of the immune system in advanced cancer patients, "

according to a study conducted in Italy. ALA and NAC are non-prescription

supplements available over-the-counter, and AMI is a drug that is used to

prevent some of the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

TAKING NSAIDS, ASPIRIN DURING PREGNANCY INCREASES MISCARRIAGE RISK. Women

who take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin during

pregnancy increase their risk of miscarriage by 80 per cent, according to

a study in the British Medical Journal.

TIGHT NECKTIE AFFECTS EYE PRESSURE, STUDY REPORTS. Wearing a tight

necktie constricts neck veins and increases intraocular pressure in both

normal people and those with glaucoma, reports a study in the British

Journal of Opthamology. The researchers note that a tight necktie could

affect both the diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

SOME AUTISTIC CHILDREN AIDED BY INTENSIVE BEHAVIORAL PROGRAM. A new study

provides confirmation that some young autistic children can make

remarkable progress when they participate in a specially designed

intensive behavioral intervention program.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS REDUCE CANCER RISK. A dietary supplement of vitamins

and minerals may help to cut the risk of cancer, research has found. It

consisted of 6 mg. of beta-carotene, 120 mg. of vitamin C, 90 mg. of

vitamin E, 100 micrograms of selenium, and 20 MG. of zinc.

LOW-DOSE MELATONIN CUTS OXIDATIVE DAMAGE IN MICE. A study from India

shows that low-dose chronic administration of melatonin acts as a free

radical scavenger and anti-aging agent in mice tissues-- brain, liver,

spleen and kidney. The study administered one tenth of a mg. of melatonin

for every kg. of body weight per day for three months. Conversion: one

pound is equal to 4536 kg.

TWO VITAMINS APPEAR TO PREVENT COGNITIVE DECLINE. Recent research at

Harvard Medical School has shown that a high intake of vitamin C and

vitamin E helps prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease and that

very high doses of vitamin E delay the progression of the disease.

REDUCING CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE BY REPLACING FATS. A major study has

shown that the risk of coronary artery disease is effectively reduced when

trans fatty acids and saturated fatty acids are replaced with unsaturated
