Guest guest
Dear Friends, The National Yogurt Association (NYA) has filed a proposal with the Food & Drug Administration for a " Revised Yogurt Standard of Identity. " In their petition, NYA proposes changes to reflect current industry practices, recognizing the need to allow for " use of future technologies. " WHAT " NEW " TECHNOLOGIES? Is this another way of asking for the preapproval of new genetically engineered products? On page 3 of NYA's 14-page proposal, the yogurt people write: " Because low-fat and non-fat yogurts contain less Vitamin A than full-fat yogurt, under the proposed rule, low-fat and non-fat yogurts would require Vitamin A fortification to meet the level of full-fat yogurt. " The biotechnology industry has placed many full-page ads in the Tuesday Science section of the New York Times extolling the virtues of " goldenrice, " the genetically engineered grain containing enormous amounts of Vitamin A. Prepare to see new genetically altered yogurts containing vitamins, nutrients, and seeds for Frankenfood-style disaster. NEW PRODUCTS With the advent of new soy technologies, the dairy industry has much tofear from soy manufacturers. Many companies are now marketing a soy-based yogurt that is equal in taste but is free from any of milk's harmful components. The soy industry protests the use of the word " yogurt, " petitioning FDA to apply that name to dairy-based yogurts. ARTIFICIAL YOGURT In a phenomenal move designed to betray their own dairy producers, NYAis requesting a rule change to include reconstituted dairy ingredients(such as milk powder, casein, and whey protein) as basic dairyingredients. Many of these products are imported from overseas and represent cheap milk purchased from Soviet producers in the shadow of Chernobyl. The yogurt producers wish to include whey protein concentrate (WPC) to represent 34% of the finished yogurt culture. Theexisting standard allows no more than 8.25%. Two years ago, 80,000 tons of casein (80% of milk protein is casein) was imported into America. Last year, 110,000 tons were imported. Casein is the same glue used to adhere a label to a bottle of beer. It's the glue used to hold together wood in furniture. Got yogurt? Get mucus. The new yogurt will be great for allergists and asthma specialists. SWEETENERS In the worst spirit of taking away the public's right to know what they are eating, NYA proposes to remove the list of sweeteners that are now required on a label. One of those sweeteners is the controversial drug Aspartame. NYA proposes (page 9) that the new standard: " …creates additional flexibility in manufacturing by broadly permitting safe and suitable sweeteners, without specifying a list… Thus, a manufacturer could add a non-nutritive sweetener, such as Aspartame…using the nutrient content claim for which the food qualifies in conjunction with the standardized term 'reduced calorie yogurt.' " One out of ten-thousand Americans (phenylkeutenerics) can immediately die or get extemely ill if they inadvertantly eat aspartame. That's 10,000 Americans, representing the population of Englewood, New Jersey. Many millions more people react to aspartame. For more aspartame information: http://www.dorway.com Does the public have a right to know what they are eating? If you believe people should have that right, let the FDA know.
