This just in: concerns are mounting about the efficacy and safety of fluoride as a result of new research. So much so that the National Academies’ National Research Council (NRC) is reviewing the issues. Among concerns to be explored are the effects fluoride can have on bones and a wide range of organ systems. Now even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is wondering whether current standards set for fluoride are still valid. About a decade ago, an NRC panel found considerable gaps in knowledge about the efficacy and safety of fluoride. Among the concerns cited by the panel back then was the potential adverse effects of fluoride on the nervous system and bone. So now, the NRC will probe the latest research (toxicological, epidemiological, clinical and exposure data). You can bet that the proponents of fluoride use will be seen in full force in trying to steer any review of fluoride. Meanwhile, there is growing opposition to current standards and the practice of putting fluoride into drinking water. For example, RFD columnist Paul Connett, presenting his views to the NRC, pointed out that the EPA’s primary standard for fluoride in drinking water (MCL of 4 mg per L, or 4ppm) puts people at risk for crippling skeletal fluorosis. It is noteworthy that the first three stages of the disease cannot be easily distinguished from arthritis. Doing a bone biopsy during this period is about the only way you can detect that the disease is caused by fluoride. (Note: drinking a lot of water each day might well lead to much higher bone fluoride content.) DESCRIPTION OF THE SCOPE OF THE NRC PROJECT Since the project will last at least 24 months, you may wish to read two of Paul Connett’s RFD columns (from the archives) on fluoride — some of the best writing available on the subject. I suppose that many people are possibly fluoride-weary. They’ve heard a lot about the skirmishes on this battlefield. It’s a long-running story. But this is not one subject anyone should be weary about because it will likely become even more of a major feature on the Health Radar. Yours and mine.
