No starch, please

Man can't live by bread alone - even if it is " whole wheat "

I don't care what they taught you in Sunday school, bread is

not the staff of life. Try living on bread and water for a

while and you will see what I mean. In six weeks you will be

in very bad shape; in six months, you will be dead. You could

live on eggs and water for a lifetime. I have told this story

before but it is worth telling again:

A friend of mine was kidnapped in Guatemala about 15 years

ago. He was held in a cave for six weeks and all he had to

eat was boiled eggs and water. When he was rescued, he was

healthier than when he went into captivity. All his blood

studies were normal: blood sugar, cholesterol, protein, liver

function - everything.

Which brings me to the following report from the

mainstream.

" Research suggests that a diet full of starchy foods, such as

white rice, white bread, and potatoes, may increase a

person's risk of pancreatic cancer, especially in people who

are overweight or sedentary. Instead, round out your diet

with unrefined grains, such as brown rice and whole-wheat

bread, and less starchy vegetables, such as broccoli. "

The message here is that " white is bad, brown is good. " But,

as with so many things in the confused area of nutrition,

it's only a half-truth, and a half-truth can sometimes be

more detrimental in the long run than a complete lie. Just

because a food is brown doesn't make it healthy. You don't

need bread, rice, potatoes, beans, spaghetti, yucca, or any

other starch in your diet at all.

My message is, whether the starch is brown or white, it's

still starch and not essential to a healthy diet. It is, in

fact, detrimental. I recommend a diet that is at least 60

percent animal based, i.e., dairy and animal fat and protein

from almost anything that crawls, flies, oinks, barks,

hisses, cackles, or grunts. There are exceptions, of course:

no human. And you might want to go light on the buzzard.

Another reason not to talk to strangers

Thanks to " globalization, " we're all becoming third world

countries when it comes to TB.

I've warned of the increase in tuberculosis (TB) since 1990.

It actually started earlier than that in some minority

populations and took off with the skyrocketing HIV infection.

And the really bad news is that the new strains of TB are

highly resistant to all forms of treatment.

Late last year, a news report from England warned that TB

rates in London had reached third world proportions and

described a wave of infection across Western Europe resulting

from what health officials called " globalization. " In some

areas of Europe TB rates are higher than national rates in

China and parts of India and Africa.

What's happened in London and elsewhere in Europe is

happening here too. The global statistics are staggering:

Every day, more than 23,000 people develop active TB and

almost 5,000 die from the disease - and the numbers are on

the upswing.

Actions to take:

(1) You can catch TB from kissing or even from the breath of

a diseased person. So don't get too close to strangers.

(2) If you're going to be confined in a small space with

strangers (i.e., on a plane or train), take along a face mask

and wear it throughout your trip - especially if you're

sitting near someone who sounds like they're hacking up a

lung.

Breathing easy,
