Six hunger strikers, all former psychiatric patients, are demanding that the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance For the Mentally Ill, and the U.S. Surgeon General provide evidence that " emotional and mental problems are primarily a biologically-based brain disease. " Few people are aware of this hunger strike because it appears that the mass media do not give a damn about these people and their cause. I do. What they are questioning is of paramount importance and, in many ways, their questions aim at the very core of health policy, which is often based on ideology and not science. Here are my four columns thus far on the subject. I plan to continue to focus attention on this hunger strike for freedom in mental health: THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION SHOWS ITS ARROGANCE A MINDFREEDOM SCIENTIFIC PANEL SOCKS IT TO THE ARROGANT AND EDUCATIONALLY-CHALLENGED APA CHOICE VS FORCED DRUGGING FORCED DRUGGING: WHERE IS THE SCIENCE THAT SUPPORTS THIS PSYCHIATRIC POLICY? Also, here is the website where daily reports are posted about the hunger strike http://www.mindfreedom.org And here is another website that focuses on psychiatric rights LAW PROJECT FOR PSYCHIATRIC RIGHTS
