Here are two pages that explain the purpose and focus of the first two conferences: MAD COW DISEASE ONLINE CONFERENCE SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME ONLINE CONFERENCE Read about how you can participate. *** LIFE JOURNEY The Life Journey column by Barbara Lewis will return next Friday. *** HOT CONTROVERSIES DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER DRUG MARKETING On September 22-23, the FDA will hold a public meeting on " what kind of additional information, if any, should be required in the presentation of comparative drug claims to help consumers understand and critically evaluate them? " We are almost tempted to say " big deal. " But, of course, we won’t. There is always a tint of hope that someone will say something meaningful that might make a difference. But frankly, this is an entire area that is ripe for a major overhaul (and that probably includes the FDA along with it). There is just so much nonsense going on in advertising drugs directly to consumers that the FDA — again - is probably going through the motions of inviting comment. So, in light of this big event, we thought we would provide you with the following. It should give you a wide-scope view of the key issues: HERE’S THE RELEASE ABOUT THE FDA MEETING A RESOURCE PAGE THIS FORM OF ADVERTISING ALLOWS PATIENTS TO MAKE BETTER INFORMED CHOICES THIS FORM OF ADVERTISING MEDICALIZES NORMAL HUMAN CONDITIONS, WITH THE DRUG COMPANIES RAKING IN INCREASINGLY HEALTHY PROFITS DRUG ADVERTISING TO CONSUMERS DEFENDED IN CONGRESS A CONSUMER GROUP LOOKS AT LAPSES IN REGULATION AMA TESTIFIES TO CONGRESS
