Guest guest
When my body was way out of whack (as it was for decades) listening to myself was disaster because listening to myself meant listening to my cravings -- which were not healthy. Sugar. Bread. Chocolate. Caffeine. Etc. The next stage was to do a lot of reading to convince myself of what was good for me, whether I really liked it much or not. Then I ate according to what I believed to be correct, even though I really wanted to rebel. That seems to have worked far better than my allopath doctor believed it could in controlling my diabetes. However, I still have cravings. Not for the same foods. Not always clear if some hidden craving is trying to lure me back to my old ways, or if my body is trying to communicate with me. So I experiment for a few days & keep close monitor on my blood glucose levels. Often I find my fasting glucose levels climbing, so I go back to my standard eating fare & give the experimental food in my fridge to the homeless people I know. This summer I am living (in New Orleans) without air conditioning. When my apartment was cool from A/C, I craved much heavier food than when it is over 90 at mid-day as it is now without A/C. When I eat heavy in the A/C then go out, I suffer in the heat. When I live in the heat & eat foods more appropriate for the season, it seems far less hot outside. Although it took several weeks to adjust sleeping in my 85-93F apartment, I think the experiment has been well worth it. Last week I began to crave lots of summertime fruit. It was the smell of ripe organic peaches at WholeFoods Market which set off the cravings. So all week I have been eating fruit. One orange & one banana for breakfast & one peach & one banana at about 10 PM. This is a lot more fruit than I usually permit myself. I expected that I would have to drop this little experiment in a day or two because of rising blood glucose levels. But the exact opposite of what I feared is actually manifesting. For the past few months, my fasting blood sugar levels have been higher than I like. 135-155. When I began the 4 pieces of fresh fruit daily, my blood glucose levels dropped. Weekly range has been 105-124, with most reading from 116-120. I shall continue this experiment for another week unless my blood glucose rises. Now fructose does not require insulin to process it. But I have not dropped any carbohydrates from my diet. I have cut out nuts & flax seed oil for the week because they seem too heavy in the heat. Neither nuts nor flaxseed oil should require insulin to process. So I am not real sure what is going on. I also put some teriyaki sauce & BBQ sauce on some baked chicken, which I ate for dinner 4 nights in a row. That certainly should have raised my blood glucose level, but it did not. So I am perplexed. Alobar
