Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions about Allie. I am weaning her slightly -- from 2.5 mg to 1mL. In a week or so I'm gonna down it a little more, when she's back in school. Autistic children tend to improve their behavior while in school, that is why there is extended school year for so many children with disabilities. We're currently on our 2 week break, gonna hit the beach in a couple of days. As the food thing goes, I really am trying to get her to eat healthy. It's very frustrating because her older sister eats wonderfully. We have always had a variety of fruits and veggies available, Jessica (the eldest) used to go with me in the garden to cut broccoli and eat while watching cartoons. As she put it " Mommy, I want little trees to eat. " Additionally, my 10 mo old, Dinah Grace, will eat broccoli, beans, carrots, etc like it's going out of style. When Allie regressed at 10 mos she went from eating bananas and carrots to gagging by the mere sight of them. Her special ed teacher said she has only seen one other case as severe as Allie's. Some children with autism have to get feeding tubes because sensory/texture is so overwhelming for them. Most of us have felt that at least with her eating such junk, french fries and potato chips, she is still eating and the fear is taking those two things away might cause her to refuse eating all together. I do try to make them more healthy, such as oven baking pototoes that are splashed in olive oil. And, since we have begun the enzymes I am allowing her to eat her one source of meat that she used to like, Gerber Meat Sticks. They have milk powder so they were forbidden while following the diet, but I'm hoping we can allow them without the milk affecting her. In addition (for the last month or so), at church and school she has been eating peanut butter and crackers and vanilla wafers. My hope is that we could get some dried fruits/veggies in her since she seems to like salty, crunchy foods. Thanks again everyone, I am always researching, always praying, always looking for the best treatments for her. In the last 2 yrs we have gone from non-verbal to planning on typical kindergarten by the time she's six. Were it not for God and alternative medicine, we would probably be planning future respite care for adulthood. Now we're wondering how we're gonna be able to stand it when she drives off to college!
