Yeah, I played around with it for a while. It's basically a type of

fungus that grows on sugar and tea, and it's byproduct

resembles something between apple cider and vinegar.

Supposed to contain nutrients that are hard to come by

otherwise. Everything has to be very clean and just so or you'll

kills the shroom or mold will ruin the batch.

You need a piece of it to get started, so if your only ongoing batch

goes bad you need to get another starter :o/ I think you can

freeze the shroom without killing it, not sure how successful that

is, what i read after I lost my last batch :o/ So when you've

produced more baby shrooms than you need you might freeze

the extras instead of just tossing them so if it all goes bad you'll

have a way of starting over.

I think the quality of the shroom can deterioate from batch to

batch if you don't do it right. You want to always use a the

youngest part of the shroom to start the next batch.

When i first started the pictures of the starters i ordered showed

tiny little pancakes ( " babies " ) growing on the surface of a much

bigger shroom. When my starter grew more little babies grew on

it's surface and would easily lift off, just like the supplier said, but

then later I didn't do it right and the following shrooms were just

big, fat layered cakes with the young and old part grown into

each other. I think the quality of the tea was better in that original

batch and the babies i grew in the first batch sure looked

healthyer than any I grew after. I never been able to find that

original source again :o(

imho it's a lot of trouble for what you seem to get out of it. Kinda

fun to do tho.
