Natural Alternatives to Aspirin JoAnn Guest Jul 11, 2003 12:35 PDT

In Dr. John R. Lee's book " Optimal Health Guidelines " ,

he relates that NSAID's [non-steroidial, anti-inflammatory drugs]

Ibuprofen, etc. carry a worrisome load of adverse side effects.

NSAID's include ibuprofen [Motrin, Advil], indomethacin [indocin],

Naproxen [Aleve, Naprosyn], Piroxicam [Feldene], Sulindace

[Clinoril], and various other OTC drugs.

NSAID's are linked to 200 - 300,000 cases of gastro-intestinal tract

bleeding each year,leading to 10 -20,000 deaths.

Aspirin was originally derived from willow bark. Pharmaceutical

companies dubbed it aspirin after it was chemically altered ...it is

impossible to patent a natural substance, i.e...natural willow bark.

Both NSAID's and Aspirin interfere with the body's biosynthesis of

*prostaglandins*, suppressing inflammation and awareness of pain.

The resulting suppression fails to effectively address the cause of the

pain, fluid retention and build up of nitrogenous wastes in the blood.

The function of the prostaglandins are disrupted throughout this entire

process. They become suppressed, leading to an acidic " build up " that

leaves holes/cavities in the stomach and intestines.

In large doses acetaminophen will cause irreversible liver damage and

death and increase your chances of advanced kidney disease according to

the Journal of the AMA.

According to studies at Vanderbilt University, elderly people who

take Ibuprofen are four times as likely to die from ulcers and

gastrointestinal bleeding than others. NSAID's tend to cause sodium

retention and inhibit kidney function as well.

Looking for natural alternatives?

You might try the following herbs and supplements...

Bromelain from pineapples is a wonderful pain reliever. The isolated

component is available in supplements as well.

For migraines, the herb feverfew will cut the number and severity

of headaches and greatly reduce the nausea that usually accompanies

them.

Vitamin C & B Complex, potassium, boswellin and turmeric are natural

anti-inflammatories which reduce pain by decreasing fluid

levels due to their diuretic components that tend to reduce

inflammation.

Meadowsweet tea is very similar to willowbark and contains several

fabulous pain relieving components.

Magnesium is an excellent natural muscle relaxer and pain reliever.

Anti-oxidants like Vitamin E & C (rosehips, acerola berry),

beta-carotene, selenium [as in raw nuts, seeds, garlic, onions],

pycnogenol, citrus bioflavonoids, COQ10 and alpha lipoic acid will

reduce pain levels as well.

An additional suggestion...

Whenever you feel a headache or pain surfacing, immediately start to

drink three tall glasses of pure spring water, preferably within the

span of the first half hour.

This recommendation comes from Lorraine Day Ph.D. former trauma surgeon

and breast cancer survivor. She relates that water therapy spared her

much pain throughout the eight months it took for her to recover from

stage-three breast cancer!

For arthritis, try glucosamine, MSM, and glucosamine chrondoitin sulfate

which relieves pain without the harmful side effects of aspirin.

Diabetics should not take this supplement. It has been known to

adversely impact blood glucose levels.
