FoodNews.org Special EditionConventional vs. Organic: Is there really no health

difference?

Oct. 21, 2002 marked the official debut of the new USDA Organic seal on food.

The culmination of a 12-year struggle by organic proponents, the new seal is

expected to give a huge boost to organic agriculture, and will be a boon to

consumers who prefer organic food. USDA and agribusiness groups can be expected

to emphasize that organic food is no healthier than regular food. But that's not

true in the case of pesticide contamination.

As this new edition of EWG's online food database shows, government tests reveal

that organic is indeed a healthier food source.

Virtual Fruit Salad

Make a fruit salad with up to 8 fruits and find out how many pesticides would be

in the conventional vs. organic versions.

-->Interactive Salad Bar

Mix a garden salad with any of 11 vegetables and compare conventional to

organic.

-->Point-and-Click Produce Aisle

Shop the Foodnews produce section for 22 different fruits and vegetables. We'll

check conventional and organic items in your cart for pesticides.

-->Foods You'll Want To Buy Organic

Government data show that some conventional fruits and vegetables carry a much

heavier pesticide load than others. Here is EWG's latest list of produce to buy

organic if you can. If organic is not available, you may want to choose fruits

and veggies that are consistently less contaminated.

Obtain hydrogen peroxide (food grade)...is excellent.

Bleach just increases the toxic content of foods. Lemon essential

oil (diluted) is also a fabulous veggie wash.
