Guest guest
http://www.healthy.net/asp/templates/news.asp?Id=7221 EU crushing our right to choose I EXTEND heartfelt sympathies to Vanda Tor (Letters, June 21) for the plight that she and fellow health food consumers find themselves due to the imposition on the UK of the EU directive on dietary supplements. Vanda, I'm afraid, is learning the hard way that the EU rules by edict -- completely by-passing Westminster. The effect of new laws, for which the pharmaceutical industry has been lobbying for years, places all herbal medicines, vitamins and minerals on the same regulatory basis as mass-market drugs. More than 8,000 products used by millions of UK customers will vanish from the shelves. More than 604 million signatures from around the world have been sent to Brussels demanding free and unfettered access to natural remedies for the people of the EU. If all the 87 British MEPs had voted together, which they never ever do, they would not have made the slightest impact on the outcome of this outrageous EU directive. I hope the people of the North West will recall the threat to Vanda's right to choose her own health regime and the impotence of our own government during the Euro elections next year. Guest guest
Dear Group, The drug companies are flexing their muscles to stop neutraceuticals (herbs, and vitamin/ mineral supplements) from being sold anywhere in the world because sales of natural products are cutting into their profits. I read the news about Australia's campaign against natural supplements and recently here in Canada, Health Canada ordered Canadian customs officers to seize shipments at the border of a vitamin/ mineral supplement called Empower Pluw. This supplement is manufactured in the U.S. and has been found to be effective in treating bipolar disorder. Not only did Health Canada try to end sales of this supplement, it also issued a cease and desist order to stop a $500,000 study (half completed) of the testing of Empower, a study being conducted by the University of Calgary. So now Truehope, the non-profit organization that markets Empower will not have the concrete proof it needs of the effectiveness of the supplement in treating manic depression. Ironically Health Canada has approved for use numerous psychotropic drugs that have devastating side effects and is taking measures to prevent the only effective natural treatment that has absolutely no side effects from being tested and used. I find this situation disgraceful. Voters delude themselves if they think that they control their legislators - the truth is that it is the multinational drug companies who wield the power. I believe that banning neutraceuticals is a world-wide thrust on the part of the drug companies and one that we must stop through political protest. Here in Canada, people who use Empower waged a vociferous lobbying campaign of their Members of Parliament, their Prime Minister, and the Minister of Health and we succeeded in stopping the seizures - at least for the time-being. The drug companies are not going to give up in their attacks and we must not give up our fight against them. Anna-Jean Cresswell
