WHO global conference aims to create atlas of traditional medicine

KOBE, Japan, June 17 (AFP) - A WHO-sponsored international conference started in

Japan Tuesday aiming to map the global availability of traditional medicine to

make it more accessible and to raise awareness of the treatment.

Some 80 participants from about 35 nations gathered in the western Japanese city

of Kobe for the three-day meeting.

They hope to finish and publish the atlas of traditional medicine next year,

said Yuji Kawaguchi, director of the Kobe-based World Health Organisation (WHO)

Centre for Health Development, which organised the conference.

" In many areas of the world, traditional medicine is more readily available than

modern medicine.

" In some communities... traditional medicine is the only form of medicine that

is accessible, " Kawaguchi said as he kicked-off the International Meeting on the

Global Atlas of Traditional Medicine.

The Kobe centre, which started the atlas project in 1999, hopes it will be used

to improve health care systems, clinical research, training and the quality of

traditional medicine around the world, according to Kawaguchi.

It will be particularly important to promote the treatment to the world's policy

makers, said Kazumi Ueda, spokeswoman for the centre.

" With the atlas, we want policy makers around the world to deepen their

understanding of the issue and to make better health-care policies, " she said.

" We hope that this atlas will, for example, trigger initiatives to expand health

insurance policies to cover traditional medicine, which often is not fully

utilised, " she said.
