FORM OF VITAMIN E FOUND EFFECTIVE AS AUXILIARY CANCER TREATMENT. Colorado

researchers have found that a form of vitamin E--alpha-tocopheryl

succinate—-has proved effective as an auxiliary cancer treatment. They

note that several studies have shown that alpha-tocopheryl succinate has

inhibited and killed both human and rodent cancer cells in test tubes (in

vitro) and later in the living body of rodents (in vivo)-—without causing

normal cells to proliferate.

LOW VITAMIN B-6 LINKED TO INCREASED STROKE RISK. Researchers at

Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have discovered

a strong association between a low vitamin B-6 blood level and the risk of

stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Using 327 subjects selected

from a primary care practice of more than 18,000 patients, the researchers

emphasized that the association was not due to elevated homocysteine

levels. They measured for pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), the co-enzyme form

of vitamin B-6, produced by the liver when vitamin B-6 and other nutrients

are available.

ANTIOXIDANTS IMPROVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN RATS. New research has shown

that dietary antioxidant treatments of rats improve high blood pressure.

The antioxidants used were vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and selenium. The

researchers conclude that their “data provide convincing evidence for the

role of antioxidants in the maintenance of hypertension.”
