RFD’S HOT CONTROVERSIES*

PRODUCTS TO PREVENT AND/OR CURE SARS

By Nicholas Regush

Quite a spread of products came to life when SARS was born. Sure treatments.

Guaranteed prevention. Even oregano oil, along with a special health drink, the

disinfectant sprays, air purifiers and dietary supplements. Carnival time. We

have a disease whose origin is still unknown. We have a disease with a

poorly-understood cause since coronavirus has not been adequately stamped

scientifically as the culprit. We have hurried conventional treatment approaches

such as toxic antivirals and very risky steroids and we even have efforts in

China to use herbal medicine along with Western drugs in a more or less blind

effort to attack a still mysterious spread of an illness, which remains poorly

defined. Add to all this is the mad scientific greed-rush to grab patents for

sequencing the so-called SARS Virus (even though there is no such thing as a

SARS virus, not yet anyway) and Big Pharma’s efforts to fast-track diagnostic

tests (of what exactly? The SARS Virus?) and churn out variants of old drugs

(cold medicines). I’d say that this is quite a mess.

And then along comes the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the FDA to take a

poke at a bunch of websites that are promoting ways of battling SARS. The

problem here is that some people who run these websites can’t keep their

excitement under control, and it is much the same in my experience no matter

whether the group is conventional or alternative: big promises (Big Hype). Can

they deliver the promises. Who in hell knows? And that goes for the barkers.

Cause why? Cause the science isn’t there. Just a lot of indirect, often puny

evidence (if there is any evidence) that gets stirred into a big pot and dished

out like candy for the masses. No, it isn’t enough to suggest that something

might have potential. No, it isn’t enough to raise possibilities for further

research. Instead, there has to be some claim that the damn thing is a miracle

or, from the lips and pens of the more cautious, a likely miracle.

I frankly have had enough of this bilge from both conventional and alternative

medicine. It’s mostly money talking these days. Try to find real evidence,

beyond the vitriolic attacks either on alternative medicine or the

Establishment, for claims and good documentation. Good luck to you. Of course,

if politics (everything should be sold to anyone who wants it - that’s what’s

happening anyway) is your cup of tea, then, by all means go with the drift. I

won’t be joining you. And I won’t be alone, either. Over the years, in my

journalistic career, I have met many people in both conventional and alternative

health spheres. Many good people who care about others and wouldn’t take their

dime unless they felt there was value being offered. For example, there are some

alternative practitioners out there — doctors, nurses, herbalists,

chiropractors, and so on — who truly care about what ALTERNATIVE means. Ditto

for the conventional side where many good people are NOT selling their souls to

drug companies. And then there is the oozing blight of the bullshit artists (on

both sides) who have talked themselves into a stupor about how they know exactly

what life is all about and what must be done to stop a so-called " new " illness.

SARS is just another example of why the planet is going to crap, and not

necessarily because of illness.
