A SURVIVOR OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN

THE PSYCHIATRIC SYSTEM DURING HER CHILDHOOD

IS SEEKING OTHERS WHO WILL SHARE THEIR STORIES

NATIONAL TOUR: OREGON, NEW MEXICO,

GEORGIA AND MASSACHUSETTS

Kristine Medea is a psychiatric survivor from

Atlanta, Georgia who has experienced two years

of psychiatric institutionalization during her childhood.

And now she wants to help others who experienced

abuse at the hands of the psychiatric system during

their childhood to TELL THEIR STORY.

Kristine is a member of Support Coalition, as are

two of her colleagues on this project: Pat Deegan and

Vanessa Jackson, whose work I highly recommend.

For more information about Kristine's tour, which starts

this weekend in Oregon, read the below and reach

her directly via the contact information provided.

Even if you can't meet her personally, Kristine is

also gathering stories in other ways, so ask her

about that. On the phone, we have been impressed by

Kristine's warm, empathy and professionalism.

(At BOTTOM is more information about other activities

related to youth, psychiatry and oral histories.)

Finding Our Way Through

Giving Voice to Childhood Psychiatric Survivors

SEEKING CHILDHOOD PSYCHIATRIC SURVIVORS, EX PATIENTS

and CONSUMERS to SHARE THEIR STORIES for

an ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

Who is Kristine Medea?

I am a childhood survivor of psychiatric

incarceration at the Cedar Hills Psychiatric

Hospital and then transferred to the Oregon State

Hospital in Salem, Oregon for two years, between

the ages of 11 and 13. My hospitalizations

continued in shortened stays throughout my young

adult life. Ending up with more than 12

hospitalizations in total. My experience left

long felt scars on my spirit. It is because of

these experiences that I am committed to bring

the absent voice children like myself forward. My

intention for this project is to give voice to the

often discarded and forgotten children in the

psychiatric system and debunk the myth that help

cannot harm. I will use these experiences to

inform current practice and policy for the

children's public mental health system through

writing a monograph focusing on what the child

voice has to teach. Center for Mental Health

Services and SAHMSA provide funding for this

project.

Who

I am interviewing and collecting oral histories

from adults across the country for this project

who were incarcerated as children in the

psychiatric system.

How is Oral history Conducted?

I prefer to do face to face interviewing when

ever possible. All interviews will be in story

format allowing for the interviewee to control

the content and flow of the process. I will ask

permission and to tape the interview both with

audio and video. I will use the video and

audiotapes to capture exact quotes to weave

through the monograph. The interviewee will

review all written work and have full editorial

rights as it relates to their story prior to

final submission. My intention is to have a

dialogue in the spirit of respectful and

supportive inquiry bringing the kids voice to

this important work. I need your help in bringing

our collective history forward. Please contact me

for questions or to set an appointment.
