A young mother facing the loss of a leg to cancer, and possibly her life, sought a second opinion. Her oncologist had told her that the tumor on the back of her leg was inoperable and amputating up through the pelvis, just in case the cancer had spread, would be the safest way to go. Weeks later, she walked out of another hospital, tumor-free, both legs intact, under her own power. Six months later, she sent a picture of her and her son walking on the beach to the doctor that saved her leg. She had found a surgical oncologist that was able to remove the tumor only. That doctor was Francisco Contreras. When consulted by the woman, Dr. Contreras shared her belief that the leg could be saved. He took her into six hours of surgery where he painstakingly removed the watermelon-size tumor that had been intertwined with veins, arteries, tendons, nerves and muscle. Dr. Francisco Contreras, a cancer surgeon, spends few hours in the operating room when compared with colleagues. He spends most of his time educating people on the prevention of cancer and speaking out on behalf of patients' rights. He lives his conviction that the most effective, least aggressive therapy should be offered to patients. Occasionally, this includes surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, but most of the time, he utilizes natural, non-toxic treatments. His desire to help patients without causing them to suffer has also led him to develop unique surgical techniques that allow him to introduce anti-cancer agents directly to the tumor. Background/Professional Activities Dr. Contreras attended medical school in Mexico and specialized in surgical oncology (cancer surgery) in Vienna, Austria. He oversees the care of approximately 500 new cancer patients each year at his hospital, the Oasis of Hope. His father, Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr., founded the Oasis of Hope in 1963 and taught Francisco that each patient is an individual that deserves compassion and the only therapies that should be offered to them would be the ones that the doctor would take if he had the same illness. " Prevention is the only cure " is a phrase that sums up Francisco Contreras's mission to empower people over illness. Dr. Contreras says, " Some people think that either a major illness will hit, or it won't. It is a matter of fate or genes. They don't seem to realize that many things can be done to avoid getting sick. " He has authored three books, a series of booklets, countless magazine articles and is currently working on a heart disease prevention book. Dr. Contreras has addressed the House of Representatives in Georgia, the World Congress on Breast Cancer, even the Association of Tumor Markers, all in the effort to encourage doctors to seek alternatives to the treatments that the medical journals indicate are not effective. He also works tirelessly to encourage people to take responsibility for their health and not rely on doctors to fix their bodies, once they have broken down. In the year 2000, Dr. Contreras traveled to China, Russia, Argentina, Japan, the USA, Mexico and many countries in Europe. He is constantly searching out new and promising therapies. His faith in God and the support of his wife and family, give him strength and stamina to continue. He gives so much of himself because he feels called of God to do so. Personal With all of the responsibility and pressure of treating seriously ill patients and traveling to promote health and discover new therapies, Dr. Contreras depends on the support of his family and time to get away from it all. He is married and has five children ranging in ages of a college freshman down to a first year kindergarten student. He and his family love to snow ski. In fact, Dr. Contreras enjoys all sports that include death-defying speed. He loves to race motorcycles and when asked why he does it, he replies, " In order for me to relax, I need to do something that requires all of my concentration. To ride a bike at high speed, I have to clear my mind on everything or it would be disastrous. This really helps me unwind and leave stress behind, at least for a couple of hours. " When Dr. Contreras's children decided that they wanted to rollerblade, he learned how too. He loves tennis and likes to exercise when he can. He travels so much but when he has a layover at an airport, he goes on long walks and carries his bags to get a workout. There is a musical side to this physician as well. As a youth, he wanted to be a concert pianist. Medicine won out. He still plays quite beautifully and he even recorded an album in Spanish. In fact, the Oasis of Hope reproduced it on a compact disc for its 20th anniversary. Dr. Contreras enjoys reading, not just medical journals, but mysteries and Christian motivational literature as well. One of his dreams is to write a suspense novel. You might mention that to his publisher. He says that the key to happiness is to keep things simple and enjoy whatever you have and not worry about what you might not have. Place of Work The Oasis of Hope Hospital is a unique place that was founded in 1963 and has hosted more than 100,000 patients over four decades. It is an impressive 100-bed treatment facility with 3 operating rooms, 24hr. emergency care, radiology department and intensive care units. But it is not the world-class installations that set Oasis of Hope apart. It is the doctors, nurses and support staff and the treatment philosophy. Staff members are encouraged to treat the whole patient, not the disease. They have been given two guiding principles. 1. They should never recommend a therapy that would cause great suffering or harm. 2. They should love their patients as they love themselves. These two principles result in a great benefit for the patients because they know that their doctor will only recommend things that the physician would be willing to take himself if in the same condition and the doctor will not recommend something that has extreme negative side effects. Vision Francisco Contreras wants to make a difference. Everything he does has two main purposes, to help people find happiness and wellness. His vision is to expand the Oasis of Hope to reach more people on a physical and spiritual level. This will include the creating of a full medical campus as well as publishing many more books and possibly starting a radio program. He also desires to open mobile clinics to bring medical care to the indigent people in Mexico. His mobile clinics will treat medical needs in the day and at night, the word of God will be taught. He says it is a great honor to continue and advance his father's mission to improve the quality of people's physical, emotional and spiritual lives around the world. http://www.oasisofhope.com/resources/health/doctor_practice.htm The complete " Whole Body " Health line consists of the " AIM GARDEN TRIO " Ask About Health Professional Support Series: AIM Barleygreen " Wisdom of the Past, Food of the Future " http://www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/AIM.html The New Search - Faster.
