Shilajit: Wonder Mineral of Ayurveda Shilajeet, also known as mineral pitch,

comes from the rocks in the lower Himalayas during the warm, summer months. It

is believed that its origin is from the decomposition of vegetable substances.

This organic matter is composed of a large variety of minerals along with the

main active ingredient - Benzoic acid. Throughout history there has been four

varieties of Shilajeet which have been used; however, the iron shilajit which is

a blackish brown is the most common one used for medicinal purposes. A purified

form is used which may have been processed with a number of different herbs

including Triphala, Dashamula or Ashwagandha. Having tonic properties, this

substance is useful in a wide variety of treatments. It has been said that there

is hardly any curable disease which cannot be assisted with the aid of

Shilajeet. General debility and fatigue is among the list of ailments which can

be helped with Shilajeet. The overall action is alterative, tonic, slightly

laxative, cholagogue, respiratory stimulant, disinfectant, expectorant,

intestinal antiseptic, diuretic and lithotriptic.

It is widely used for diabetes, impotency, chronic fatigue, genito-urinary

diseases, gall stones, jaundice, enlarged spleen, dyspepsia, worms, digestive

troubles, piles, hysteria, insanity, nerve diseases, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea,

menorrhagia, tuberculosis, leprosy, eczema, elephantaisis, anemia, anorexia,

bronchitis, asthma and fracture of bones.

It will help carry the other herbal support into the deep tissues of the body.

This is why is works so well on diabetes and insulin resistance - because it

carries the blood sugar into the resistant cells. In the same way it helps to

rejuvenate the body and nervous system on a very deep level. It is not a

stimulant to make you feel more energy - it actually helps to rebuild the

nervous system.

Since it also promotes expectoration, it makes it useful in respiratory

illnesses. It may be used in acute and chronic bronchitis. The antispasmatic

qualities brings it's effects with asthma, colic, other intestinal complaints

and menstrual difficulties. It addresses ascitis and edema with being a

diuretic. The average dose is one 250 mg. tablet once a day. Some diseases may

benefit from an increased dose, please ask the advice of your Ayurvedic

physician if you have any questions about dosage. You may wish to include

Shilajeet along with your use of other herbs. In sexual weakness you may take

Shilajeet along with Ashwagandha. For menorrhagia you may take it with Amalaki.

With painful micturition it would be helpful with Yashtimadhu (licorice). In

mental disturbances you may want to also include Jatamansi. In Diabetes it

decreases the quantity of sugar and urine. You may want to take it with other

hypoglycemic herbs. Arthritis may receive results with an addition of Shilajeet

to your other herbal therapies. Shilajeet may also be applied externally as an

antiseptic, parasiticidal, and anodyne.

Diabetes is one of the major degenerative diseases in the world today. It is a

major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is

characterized by a reduced ability to use and metabolize dietary carbohydrates,

abnormally high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) and an abnormal amount of

sugar in the urine. Diabetes is classified into 2 categories: Type 1: Insulin

dependent (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. Type 2: non-insulin dependent)

NIDDM or adult-onset diabetes. IDDM begins suddenly, usually in childhood. It is

precipitated by a viral attack on the pancreas, and probably genetic factors.

The control of this type of diabetes requires insulin therapy. It is felt that

there is no cure for this type.

NIDDM begins after the teen years. The progression is slow compared to IDDM and

symptoms are mild in the beginning but becomes severe with the progression. The

symptoms of this type is similar to IDDM but the pathology is different. The

pancreas contains specialized cells called beta cells that secrete the hormone

Insulin in response to high blood sugar levels. In normal conditions, dietary

carbohydrates are absorbed from the intestinal lining into the blood as glucose

and other simple sugars. As blood levels rise, insulin is secreted from the

pancreas and in conjunction with Glucose Tolerance Factor, binds to specialized

sites on the membranes of body cells and encourages the transportation of sugar

from the blood to the cells. This serves two purposes, it lowers blood sugar and

increase availability of sugar(energy) for normal cell functioning. Blood sugar

levels return to pre-meal levels as the blood sugar levels decrease. This

process is arrested in diabetic conditions. Blood sugar rises after meals but

the pancreas does not secrete adequate amounts of insulin (IDDM) or normal

amounts are secreted but the cells are unresponsive to the hormone (NIDDM).

Since the cells are starved of energy, fat is broken down to provide energy to

the cells. This raises the blood fat levels increasing the risk of cardio

vascular diseases.
