Guest guest
Mon, 31 Mar 2003 07:16:36 EST Cat's Claw for colds.cancer and AIDS Kerry Bone, the herbalist who writes for Dr.Jonathan V.Wright's newsletter Nutrition & Healimg, wrote in the April,2003 issue about Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) this multi-purpose herb. There are two types one contains only pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (POA) the other contains POA and tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids(TOA). Researc has shon TOA's to counteract some of the immune enhancing effects of POA's, so you want to use those containing POA only. Check the label in yor health food store, if it is not clear, call the manufacturer. A Newspaper report in Lima,Peru reported success of Cat's Claw standardized extract in treatment of allergies , bronchitis. genital herpes and herpes zoster. The progression of AIDS and cancer was said to be slowed in patients on cat's claw and the side effects of AZT and radiation therapy were reduced. In a study of 44 AIDS ptients using varying doses from 20 to 60 mg/day of standardized cat's claw root extract.AZT or a combination of both, found patients taking cat's claw experienced a significant increase in their T4 cells for the first year of therapy--with a persistent increase for 3 years. Patients p24 antigen levels decreased, indicating less virus in the blood. Patients taking both AZT and cat's claw extract showed the same improvement in the T4 cell counts at the end of the first 6 months as those on extract alone. So the AZT did not lower the effectiveness of Cat's claw.
