Visit Citizens for Health at http://www.citizens.org and take

action today. The deadline is April 7, 2003.

 

In a proposed rule published February 28, 2003 the U.S.

Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), which oversees

the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), is asking for public

comment regarding the safety of ephedra and the potential

addition of warning labels to products containing the herb.

 

Significantly, and here is where you come in, the FDA is

also asking what additional legislative authority it might

need to effectively address this issue. What is troubling is

that any change in FDA's legislative authority would be the

result of amending the Dietary Supplement Health and

Education Act (DSHEA), which is the law under which

supplements are regulated, and apply to the entire

supplement category - not just ephedra. The end result could

be a return to the days when, at the very least, label

information was more limited than it is today under DSHEA

regulations, and could result in loss of choice in your own

health care decisions by limiting access to supplements.

 

We need your comments by April 7th, 2003! Communicate your

support for DSHEA today. Visit www.citizens.org to have

your voice heard by the FDA and Members of Congress.

 

BACKGROUND

 

Millions of consumers, possibly you among them, contacted

Congress in 1993/94 urging support for the regulatory

framework, the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act

(DSHEA) in order to provide important health information and

products to consumers and to ensure the safety of these

products. The unanimous passage of the law reflected the

overwhelming number of constituents – citizens like you --

demanding access to nutritional supplements.

 

As a result, Congress unanimously passed DSHEA, which is a

good law and gives the FDA all the power it needs to ensure

safe and effective products when enforced.

 

This recent action is just one of the many efforts underway

to undermine DSHEA and limit consumer's health choices.

 

It's imperative that consumers - every person concerned

about access to a wide variety of safe and beneficial

supplements - go on the record with the FDA within the next

14 days as supporting the Dietary Supplement Health and

Education Act. Reaffirm your right to health choice by
