Guest guest
**Note I do not own this company and have nothing to with them..Just use their products in my clinics, and believe them to be some of the best on the market. UniBone™: An Ayurvedic Formulation Backed By Research March 2003 As an ingredient supplier of Ayurvedic botanicals, Geni Herbs understands the need to have valid scientific data available for both product development and benefit validation. The company is therefore working closely with a network of universities to conduct several clinical studies on its products. In addition, Pharmanza, its manufacturing division, works with the Indian forestry department and harvesters to set strict guidelines and specifications. Additional standards are used to test all raw materials, assuring standardization of the active compounds with the materials. One Ayurvedic product undergoing such scrutiny is the company's UniBone, a joint health formulation to help facilitate fracture healing. Bone is a dynamic tissue with equilibrium between bone deposition and resorption. When bone fractures occur, the healing time is typically 6 to 20 weeks, depending on the type of fracture. The stages of natural bone repair are inflammation, soft callus formation, hard callus formation, and remodeling. With the aid of ancient Ayurvedic formulas and modern science, UniBone has been proven effective in promoting faster healing. FRACTURE FACTS According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, one in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture, accounting for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. National costs associated with these fractures in 2001 were $47 million per day! A recent study found that children aged 10 to 14 years also had very high fracture rates. The study also showed that each year, approximately 1 in 37 boys and 1 in 62 girls, 10 to 14 years of age, will require orthopedic services for a fractured bone (HPN Online, Jan. 5, 2002). WHY AYURVEDA? A variety of products - from vitamins to hormones such as thyroxin, estrogen, growth hormone, and androgenic hormones - have been used to hasten the process of bone healing in fractures, but unfortunately with little success. Hence, the search continues to find an alternative from any healthcare practice that will benefit fracture patients in terms of reducing their morbidity, decreasing the period of immobilization and suffering, hastening the recovery process, and return to normal health. Fortunately, an Ayurvedic herb has revealed a possible solution. INTRODUCING CISSUS QUADRANGULARIS The company's interest in this herb was aroused when it came to know the Sanskrit name for Cissus quadrangularis - " Hadjod, " which literally means " bone-union. " This name was undoubtedly coined after its efficacy in the skeletal system was established. Its first reference is found in Bhavna Chikitsa, an Ayurvedic text written by the physician Chakradata in the 11th century. The recommended dosage is three to five grams of powder, or 600 to 1,000 mg of extract in divided doses per day. Phytochemically, 100 grams of this fresh plant contain 267 mg of carotene and 398 mg of vitamin C. It also contains steroidal principle, which has been found to be helpful in the fracture-healing process. However, in order for ancient Ayurvedic formulas to gain scientific validity in today's world, extensive clinical trials must be conducted. Although Geni Herbs' search for more information on Cissus quadrangularis uncovered promising data from animal studies, there was only scarce information from human studies, despite the fact that this herb had been used for centuries. Thus began the company's own crusade to examine this ingredient more closely. UNIBONE STUDIES An open pilot study was conducted using the company's UniBone extract, which contained Cissus quadrangularis manufactured and supplied by Pharmanza India. The extract was administered in capsule form three times a day to patients with long fractures in their legs that had been fixed with an interlocking nail. The average fracture healing time for these patients (with long-bone fractures), normally 16 to 20 weeks, was reduced to 12 to 14 weeks in the UniBone-treated group, a result that was confirmed radiographically. Among the volunteers who participated in this study were two postgraduate doctors who provided ideal clinical feedback about the product. Additionally, no side effects were reported. This reduction in healing time motivated Geni Herbs to explore the clinical efficacy of UniBone even further. The company believes that such results were sufficient enough for UniBone to be studied further for its role in facilitating the healing of bone fractures. Based on research to date, Geni Herbs recommends a dosage of UniBone at 500 mg in capsule form three times a day. <><><><><> Geni Herbs is the exclusive distributor of UniBone, available in powder, liquid, and granular extracts. The company also offers bulk tablets and capsules for private label needs. For more information on UniBone or Cissus quadrangularis, call (317) 776-3600.
