On February 24, 2003 Senator Forrester filed Senate Bill 144, FELONY FOR THE UNAUTHORIZED PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. If passed, many alternative practitioners would leave the state due to the threat of prosecution. And your choices of healthcare will be even more severely restricted, as well as further erosion of your civil rights. Your immediate calls and correspondence to legislators citing opposition to this bill have made a difference. Significant numbers of voters have made their positions clear to many legislators. One senator (Allran) who formerly co-sponsored this bill withdrew because of public opposition. A couple more on the J1 committee have voiced their opposition, as well. Nevertheless, the Fiscal Impact of this bill was officially filed on March 6. This assumes the need for an additional prison bed for the first year and three prison beds the second year, at a cost of $22,786.95 per bed. Also included was estimated court costs of $4,637 per trial for each offense that is brought to trial as a Class I felony. We are tracking this bill in the Senate, you may also: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session =2003 & BillID=s144 A similar bill proposal was successfully defeated three years ago. We need your continued support to send a strong message to the General Assembly. The proposed bill S-144 is unacceptable to the citizens of North Carolina. You may confirm your legislators via www.ncleg.com, by selecting the 'Representation' button and entering your nine-digit zip code from your driver's license. We will do our best to alert you as well. The day before it is heard in committee, we all need to flood these senators with emails & phone calls, to make a definite impact. Also, as many folks as possible should come to Raleigh & make a personal appearance at the committee hearing. Stay tuned and see our developing website (it is being professionally renovated). Please visit it frequently for more info & sample letters to send to your legislator: http://www.citizensforhea lthcarefreedom.org CHFC Update: As we mentioned in our last letter, our first project, the Carolina Health Freedom Coalition, is aimed at legalizing non-state-licensed healthcare professionals in NC. Our bill draft has been reviewed by several volunteer attorneys & has been shared with several legislators. We have prepared significant supporting document packages and have already given them to several Representatives & Senators. CHF has been in contact with quite a few legislators, but we haven’t been able to confirm a sponsor for the bill yet. This is why we really need to hire a lobbyist. We have an experienced lobbyist that we are ready to do business with, but we need more funds. If everyone that receives this sends in $25, we can sign the contract with the lobbyist & get the bill introduced. The deadline for introducing bills for this legislative session is APRIL 2! PLEASE make your non-tax-exempt contribution out to “CHF-NC Fund” TODAY. Mail to P O BOX 62282, Durham NC 27715. If we change the law, we won’t have to worry about bills like S144 again. Thank you!!! Meanwhile, tell your senators that you want their help in solving this problem, that is, how can we have free choice in regard to our health care, AND how do we make it legal for alternative professionals to practice in NC? What else can you do? We invite you all to be a part of our new health freedom movement. CHF needs state wide volunteers to expand our growing network. This can only work if there are involved citizens in every NC County. Currently, we need experienced people in our Fundraising, Media Coordination & Networking groups.
