Thank you, TL Dr. Whitaker's Response: Silver has long been recognized for its antimicrobial effects. The ancient Romans used to drop silver coins in pitchers of milk to prolong its freshness, and colloidal silver was a popular remedy for infections among conventional physicians in the early 1900s. Since the advent of antibiotics in the 1930s, however, it had gradually fallen out of favor as it was replaced by germicides that worked better. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in colloidal silver — not among physicians, but among consumers. Much of this interest can be attributed to aggressive marketing campaigns by companies claiming that their product fights cancer, AIDS, infectious diseases, parasites, chronic fatigue, and 650 other diseases. These companies swear it has no side effects and is completely safe. In a nutshell, they're wrong. Colloidal silver is not the cure-all it's made out to be, and I have some concerns about its safety. When silver is taken orally, it can build up in the body, resulting in a permanent and disfiguring discoloration of the skin called argyria. There has been no published research on colloidal silver for decades, and the FDA has chastised several companies for making unsubstantiated claims. Furthermore, many of the products are of dubious quality. In 1995, nine colloidal silver products sold in health food stores were tested, and the results were not pretty. Only five showed any antibacterial activity at all, the efficacy of the products fell over time, and two were contaminated with microorganisms. In addition, the amount of silver varied from 15.2 percent to 124 percent of the amount stated on the labels. Save your money.
