Guest guest
http://www.dr-rath-health-foundation.org/studies/asthma.htm Asthma The eradication of today's most common health problems is dependent on one factor only: how fast the information about this breakthrough in natural health can be spread. Whilst the scientific knowledge to combat these diseases effectively is available and the essential nutrients to prevent these health conditions can be produced at low costs, in any quantity, anywhere in the world, the dissemination of this life-saving information to the people of the world is being obstructed. ASTHMA AND MAGNESIUM " Magnesium Sulfate Is Effective for Severe Acute Asthma Treated in the Emergency Department " Rowe BH, et al, WJM, February, 2000;172:96.- In evaluating 7 trials of magnesium sulfate infusion encompassing 665 patients, of which 5 were adult trials and 2 were pediatric, analyses of patients with severe asthma showed a reduction in hospital admission rates, whereas there was no difference shown for patients with mild-to-moderate asthma. This study showed no difference in pulmonary function or vital signs. In studies of patients with severe asthma, the peak expiratory flow rate improved by 52 l/min and the forced expiratory volume in 1 second by 8% of the predicted value. Intravenous magnesium sulfate reduced the rate of hospital admissions and improved pulmonary function in patients with severe asthma treated in the emergency department. ASTHMA, EXERCISE AND VITAMIN C “Vitamin C Helps Reduce Asthma After Exercise " McKinney, Merritt, Medical Tribune, June 5, 1997;6/Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 1997;151:367-370. In 20 individuals between 7 and 28 years of age who had exercise-induced asthma, half took 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day while the other half took a placebo. Nine of the individuals taking vitamin C were able to exercise without suffering symptoms of exercise-induced asthma such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, and it lessened the severity of the condition in other. Vitamin C could be important in protecting against endogenous and exogenous oxidants. Vitamin C is an attractive agent because it has no known side effects. ASTHMA AND SELENIUM " Selenium Status is Decreased in Patients With Intrinsic Asthma " Kadrabova, Jana, et al, Biological Trace Element Research, 1996;52: 241-248. This study evaluated selenium in the plasma and erythrocytes, and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity, in 22 intrinsic asthma patients compared to 33 controls. Selenium concentrations in the plasma and erythrocytes, and glutathione peroxidase activity were decreased in intrinsic asthma patients. There was a significantly high correlation between plasma and erythrocyte selenium concentrations in asthmatics when looking at all subjects as a whole. ASTHMA AND SELENIUM " Reduced Selenium in Asthmatic Subjects in New Zealand " Flatt, Amber, et al, Thorax, 1990;45:95-99. Selenium is an important component of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that protects against oxidative metabolites from the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. Low selenium levels may increase the risk to the inflammatory processes in asthma. Whole blood and plasma selenium levels, as well as glutathione peroxidase levels, were measured in 56 asthmatic and 59 non-asthmatic control subjects in New Zealand, a country which has a low dietary selenium intake and a high incidence of asthma. Asthma patients had lowered values for whole blood selenium and glutathione peroxidase activity as compared to controls. Atopic individuals also had lower levels than controls. Plasma levels of selenium and glutathione showed no difference between asthmatics and controls. There was a 5.8 fold increase in the risk of asthma among subjects with low glutathione peroxidase levels and 1.9 for low whole blood levels. These results support the hypothesis that lowered selenium and glutathione peroxidase levels may contribute to the incidence of asthma in New Zealand.
