Guest guest
UK cardiac mortality " highest in Western Europe " 20/02/2003 15:29:00 The UK has one of Western Europe's highest death rates from heart disease, according to new research that highlights a strong variation between mortality rates in Europe. Figures published by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) this week show the risk of dying from heart disease differs greatly across the continent, mainly due to lifestyle factors and standards of care. The report says heart disease kills more than 4 million Europeans every year and death rates are highest among eastern and central European countries. Within western Europe, the UK, Ireland and Finland have the highest annual death rates, while Mediterranean countries, such as Spain, France and Israel, have the lowest - fewer than three deaths per 1,000 population. Differences between individual European countries are striking, the ESC said. In Russia, the rate of death from heart disease for people aged between 35 and 74 is eight times that in France, and Ireland's rate is twice that of Italy. The society said the situation was dynamic. In Scandinavia, for example, the death rate from heart disease is decreasing faster than anywhere else in Europe, while rates in central and eastern European countries have recently increased by as much as 60 per cent. The society said the inequality could be explained by countries' differing lifestyles and healthcare standards, but warned that action needed to be taken. ESC spokesperson Professor John Martin, from University College London, said, " Changes in lifestyle and appropriate use of medicines have started to decrease heart disease in Europe. " However, the steadily ageing European population means that this positive effect will be offset in the near future unless drastic action is taken. " The ESC hopes to tackle heart disease by developing prevention and treatment guidelines for doctors, but notes that a significant proportion of doctors do not follow recommendations. Another survey conducted by the society revealed marked discrepancies in the use of heart disease risk assessment guidelines. Only one-fifth of doctors in France and Poland adhere to such protocols, compared to a third of German and Italian doctors, and three-quarters of doctors in Spain and the UK. The ESC recently launched the " Heart Plan for Europe " , which involves sharing best practice between countries, adopting a common strategy for disease prevention, and encouraging governments to provide more support towards tackling heart disease. © HMG Worldwide 2003

With heart disease,.... What to eat and not to eat? Here's the final word on nutrition, and heart disease. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies. 1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 2. The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
