Guest guest
A couple years back the mr. and I invested in a new mattress set from a reputable company (about $1,000. worth). After it arrived I noticed a strange odour so I returned it and requested a replacement. What we learned after getting its replacement, all this big name company's mattresses smelled strange. It was the foam outgassing. I'm thinking, that can't be healthy. The suggestion from the manufacturer was to spray it with a masking scent. I can't stand masking scents and always request any hotel I stay at to not use one when they " freshen up " the room. We ended up buying yet another air purifier (We have a couple in other rooms but this one promised to deal with outgassing), placed bags of zeolite crystals all over the mattess top, put an industrial strength ionizer under the bed and left the window open in that otherwise closed off room (even though it was winter). It was a month before I could go into that room without getting an instant headache. Fortunatly we'd put our old mattress in the guest room so we weren't sleeping on the floor for those months. When we finally were able to sleep on the bed it was not without using a protective mattress shield, the air purifier, leaving that window open (I believe a web search informed the mr. and I that being in a room with an ionizer might cause cataracts so we only use it in rooms we're not using at the time.) and me vowing never ever to buy a mattress set that didn't promise to contain all enviromentally safe matterials. I'll sleep on a futon on the floor before I make a mistake like that twice. Skip forward a couple years and last November my husband was gifted a special ergonomically correct pillow (about $100. worth) for his birthday. (I use a buckwheat hull pillow under my head but not without periodically wondering if there's anything growing in there.) You guessed it. He hasn't been able to use his fancy new pillow yet. It sits in a spare room with the zeolite crystals, ionizer and the window open while we wait for it to outgas. It is made out of urethane foam. I'm curious if anyone else here has had a similair experience. What about those new miracle mattresses I see on TV that will mold to one's body, do they outgas so noticably?
