Guest guest
Here's a site on stevia: www.stevia.net Stevia is a plant and I think that from the leaves you can get a very very sweet nectar which can be used like sugar. It's a herb so it's a natural source sugar, unrefined, and it's INCREDIBLY sweet. It's really hard to find, though, because it's a threat to the sugar industry, which is huge. But people with blood sugar problems like diabetes can take it with no problems and still get their sweet fix without worrying about affecting blood sugar levels. I have the stuff at home but personally I can't stand it. It's 100 times sweeter than sugar, and I find sugar too sweet. Too me it has a synthetic taste, like Nutrasweet, and it makes me nauseous. But it works well for others. Recently I sprouted wheat and the sweet taste of that reminded me of stevia (rendering me nauseous for an entire day) so if you've ever had sprouted wheat then you have an idea of what it tastes like. In the US apparently it can only be sold as a food supplement and you can only find it in the health food stores. Hi Ilana, I wasn't bothered by the 'sweetness' per se - just the bizarre aftertaste - I've read some promotional blurbs for stevia saying " no bad aftertaste like other brands ... " etc. > How about going for LESS sweet sweeteners, like brown rice syrup or > barley malt? I think they're a lot more nutritious and much less of a > problem given that they're cultured. I was attracted to the " no-cal " properties of stevia - of course most alternative sweeteners are simple carbs. thx ===== Jonathan Dunn jon http://ephemeral.info Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Guest guest
I use liquid stevia with luck. I have made a few things from a recipe book that I got for Christmas that I liked but only when I used the liquid version. I don't like the powdered version. The powder that I tried was Now brand. The liquid that I like is KAL. I use it every morning to sweeten my homemade yogurt with strawberries and ground flaxseeds. _______________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
Guest guest
Yes, the actual leaf NOT an extract. It is very nutritious and actually helps control blood sugar levels. Guest guest
I use rice syrup to sweeten my baby's goat milk formula. I LOVE the stuff (as I sneak a fingerful). Guest guest
On Weight-Watchers, I take 1/2 cup yogurt, sweetener of your choice, and sometimes blueberries. I eat it slow. Guest guest
You may want to look at www.enzymedica.com . Look at the product called " Carbo " . I haven't used it myself, but I understand that it will help in reducing the sweet tooth problem. This is only a suggestion! Wayne GL6632 wrote: I am in the process of losing weight. Guest guest
John, Clue me in here. Perhaps you have a better grasp on reality than I do. How would enzymes for digesting carbohydrates (sugars) reduce a craving for carbohydrates? Penel > You may want to look at www.enzymedica.com . > Look at the product called " Carbo " . I am having >a terrible time with sugar >cravings any suggestions on how to curb this? > Hello John, I use several of their products. Problem is that you can't buy them on the net. I have compaired them to many other brands for potency(amt) of enzyme activity per cap and they appear to be the most potent or the biggest bang for your buck. They can be found at health food stores unfortunately they are expensive for enzyme supps but as I said their potency is superior to any that I have found to date. I don't just use with meals I use some between meals and before bed for theraputic use. I haven't been to their site for a while and noticed a couple new products, one that i'm interested in that my health food store dosen't carry and will order a bottle to try out. http://www.enzymedica.com/first.html Thanks Charles _______________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

I am having a terrible time with sugar > cravings any suggestions on how to curb this? > About a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes & had to go thru major dietary adjustments. At first, I experienced many many cravings, and I was not able to control them all. I had been taking Chromium picolinate for many years. Maybe it helped some, but not very much. Even with a non-healing diabetic ulcer in my foot & the very real prospect of amputation, I had a hard time staying away from sweets. Then I read that eating bread, potatoes, rice, beans, or grain all stimulate cravings for other carbohydrates. So does caffeine, not enough sleep every night, aspartame, MSG, and many food preservatives & colorings. Since giving up all these things, my carbo craving is very low. I do eat fresh fruit (but not fruit juices) when mixed with protein rich & /or fatty foods (nuts, seeds, heavy cream, etc.) and that does not seem to stimulate sugar or carbo cravings. While do not follow her advice religiously, I heartily recommend " The Schwarzbein Principle " http://www.okit.com/diabetes%20conference/schwarzbeinbio.html http://www.lisaekus.com/books/theschwartzbeinprinciple.htm to educate oneself about how various foods & drugs jerk around serotonin levels & how various different foods & drugs can cross-stimulate cravings for other foods & drugs.
