The purpose of astrazanthin is to protect the eyes from UV rays

that cause damage. all red ocean criters have it in them because they

live on the highly reflective surface of the sea and have built up the

protection over many years. Krill, lobster, salmon, shrimp, crabs and

flamingos. Yes, it does affect sight. I have light sensitive eyes and

it protects my eyes from UV rays as it does the marine life. I buy it

from the health food store. The whales get it from the krill and algae

they eat.

Frogs have never needed a souce of it because they could always crawl

under a lily pad or dirt bank, but when the ozone thinned they had no

protection and the UV rays are now causing mutations.

Source Naturals make it under the name astrazanthin. It is an

oxidant carotenoid. Its source is the marine algae Haematococcus

pluvialis which the krill and other animals eat. I do not know how

canthxanthin the additive for salmon is made, but the original is

GREAT stuff. P.S Ask Jeeves has a lot about this sun tannin and food

coloring agent and how it can build up in the eye.Laura
