Doc,

My mom was admitted to the hospital CCU yesterday for congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, possible pneumonia, and something to do with her liver. The doctors ran all sorts of tests, but are puzzled as to what might be going on with her liver. She has no gallstones, no pancreatitis, etc.

I talked to the doctor and, in the process of eliminating possible causes, told him about the herbs I have her on. (She's almost 82.) Of the herbs I named, only Maitake/Shiitake Mushrooms made him flinch. I can find no current literature which would indicate there is a problem with these and the liver. In fact, apart from the benefits, there seems to be little published on the possible contraindications of Maitake/Shiitake mushrooms.

Any ideas?

Dear Gogi,

I've never heard of any contraindications with Maitake/Shiitake mushrooms but that doesn't mean there aren't any under certain circumstances.

I think the best bet would be Cayenne and Hawthorne. When it comes to the heart, you can't go wrong with either one.
