Guest guest
With all this talk of oregano oil......if you grow your own oregano ... does it matter which type of oregano you grow as far as being able to make your own tincture and it being medicinal?? I am going to be landscaping my entire front yard - which I plan to do in herbs... so what kinds of oregano are the ones to grow??? However, as you probably well know, there is a lot of misinformation out there on this subject and many people do get themselves into trouble by not doing the research and learning. I meant no offense. I am not familiar with the author nor the book you cited. I am sure that it is a very good book and you seem to be quite knowledgeable where it comes to complementary therapies. But because these oils are fat soluble, they are stored in the fat if taken too long or in too large of a dose. That is why there are Recommended Daily Dosages. I would only like to add that this person should not take Oregano Oil for more than 2 weeks and no more than 2 drops, internally, 3 times per day. Take a break of a week in between before starting use again. I would also suggest that they not be taken undiluted under the tongue but with water or juice. This oil is an irritant due to phenol constituents. The sources I cite are Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand & Tony Balacs and The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils by Julia Lawless. I can say that Poke root is toxic and DON'T take Poke root, but that is only half true. Poke root can kill you, but a little will cure you. Studying and following time tested instruction is the best thing anyone can do. Oregano oil (follow the book and listen to the author) and no one can go wrong here. respectfully, Elaine - Don Eitner herbal remedies Friday, June 07, 2002 7:35 PM Re: [herbal remedies] Re: too soon to ask for help?/Oregano oil & capsules Depending on which species of Oregano you get your essential oil from, and unless you know your supplier very well, I would suggest an oil that is quite a bit less toxic. Oregano contains both Carvacrol and Thymol in varying amounts depending on species of Oregano. Carvacrol is a phenolic terpene which is irritating and corrosive because of its phenol-like nature. Thymol is a phenol and a major component in thyme and oregano, savory and ajowan; it is an irritant. Used externally say 2 to 3 drops in 1oz. of base oil (Extra virgin Olive oil is good), would be okay for eczema. But I would rather suggest using Essential Oil of Bergamot which has pretty much the same properties as Oregano oil without the carvacrol and thymol, making it less toxic to use inside. However, because it contains bergaptene, Bergamot Oil can cause photosensitization to the skin. So if you use it externally stay out of the sun for up to 12 hours. Bergamot oil may be used at up to 5 drops in 1 oz. of base oil. You may also take 3 drops between meals 3 times a day. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Bergamot oil is not considered to cause photosensitization when taken internally. Any essential oil is potentially toxic at high dosages. I have kept myself from getting the flu thats going around--remember me bragging about that last week?? Still am well as can be. I'd rather get in trouble for quoting a book, than from my state for supposedly prescribing a cure!!! (Ian you know what I mean...isn't Florida just something else!!) I've never had eczema, but I've been reading about it in "The Cure is in the Cupboard" by Cass Ingram(the book I found at Goodwill). He says on page 64 that "..the culprits include several varieties of fungi as well as staph and strep. Whats more, the researchers discovered that when the organisms were killed, the eczema was cleared." "Oil of oregano is an ideal topical remedy for eczema. This is because it attacks the cuse and also relieves symptoms. Oregano oil contains a variety of antiinflammatory compounds which reduce the swelling in eczmatous lesions, halt itching, and stop scaling. The antiseptics in the oil effectively destroy microbes found within the lesions. The pure extra virgin olive oil (my comment: this is what the oregano oil is diluted with) soothes skin, and olive oil itself is an antifungal and antibacterial agent. Treatment protocol: Rub oil of Oregano on all eczematous lesions twice daily. Take a few drops of the oil under the tongue twice daily. Also mix a drop or two of the oil in juice, milk, or water and consume once or twice daily. " There are oregano capsules to be taken three times daily also which are found at the health food store. Whew, Ian, I did it without mentioning brands or websites!!! Elaine - marilouis52 herbal remedies Friday, June 07, 2002 1:35 PM [herbal remedies] too soon to ask for help? I realize I just joined this group and I hope no one thinks badly of me for asking, but I have eczema on my hands and lower legs that just about drives me out of my mind. The only thing I've ever done about it is use Dove soap and turn down my shower. Is there anything anyone can think of for me to try? I've been tormented by this for 14 years. If anyone can help me, I'll knit a pair of socks for him/her. thank you everyone and forgive me for asking for help before you even know me.marilynFederal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1.
