Guest guest
I've been having a bad time of it lately. My mother died the day after Mother's Day. My older sister (who's certifiable, no kidding, and has been committed before) was up here on a trip and was into hyper-control mode driving everyone nuts. Then my little sister (who's a doll) came to stay with me for a few days for the memorial service. It turned out that my older sister, a multi-millionaire, ripped off all my mom's valuables that were named to go to my lil' sis and me, and has been lying her head off and back stabbing. My sweet lil' sis has her own troubles right now with a new job, just moved houses, dryer not hooked up, etc... so I've been worrying about her, too. Now, to top that all off, it appears that now my Dad is on his way out, too. He's 91, lives alone, no phone and wants to die at home, and he's having problems keeping food down. I'm concerned about getting him the care he needs, and he lives over an hour away through bad traffic. I have to go out there with a visiting nurse tomorrow to get him assessed, and hope my dad won't be mad (he has a violent temper). But I don't want him to suffer. Anyway, that's in addition to a lot of other things that normally I could take in stride (like somoene bounced a $950 check on me, I'm unemployed, and my dad's lawyer appears to have lost his will, and I'm executrix, and I'm waiting to see what else my bad sis is going to pull, etc.). I'm fielding constant emails and phone calls from my son, my little sister, my daughter, etc., coordinating with my Dad's doctor, the nursing staff, etc., so I'm just not getting any peace. You know how it can get. I know this will pass, but it's sure not fun all at once. So as a result, I keep having heart flutterings, where it just takes off with a fast, abnormal beat when I'm sitting quietly. Normally I have very good/normal blood pressure, and low cholesterol, so I'm not worried that I'm going to die or anything, but it's most annoying when it's just feeling " funny " in my chest, and it's happening a LOT. Does anyone know anything I could do/take/increase in my diet to get my heartbeat to regulate out? I hate to go to a doctor for nasty pills, and I really don't have the time right now either. Thanks, Melinda

Guest guest
Sorry to hear about all your recent troubles, Melinda. I hope everything works out for you. As for the heart palpitations, I used to have exactly the same thing. My heart would suddenly, and for no apparent reason, start to beat very very quickly. It would often do that for several minutes and finish off with a sudden slowing that pounded in my chest for a minute or so. When the deep slow pounding started I always felt relieved, even though I was about to pass out, because I knew the episode was coming to an end. I went through this a lot when I was about 12-13. I saw a cardiologist and the whole bit and they said that nothing was wrong with me, of course. Then I went through it again about 5 years ago when many many things in my life were changing dramatically. Since then I've linked the irregularity to anxiety, for myself, and it sounds like you might be going through something similar. It was at that point that I started doing yoga and I'll tell you, I haven't had an episode since. Not once. I know adding another thing into your schedule right now probably seems impossible but it's so important to take time for yourself. Sooo, I don't have any herbal suggestions, though the ones commonly recommended for anxiety on this list might help, but I do know that my yoga practice has brought a little touch of serenity to my very busy life. Take care! Ann --- iris054 <clicker wrote: > I've been having a bad time of it lately. My mother died the day > after Mother's Day. Guest guest
Melinda, sounds like alot of stress. do you keep it all in or do you let it out? My ex had similar to you but it was like a heart attack with the chest pains and down the arm... the doc after test figured out it was stress... told him next time it comes on drink about a half bottle of maalox or milk of magnesia... He would let everything bottle up inside him. Suzi iris054 <clicker wrote: I've been having a bad time of it lately. My mother died the day after Mother's Day. And thank you I am trying really hard to find a place. I found one I can afford and is just perfect close to work and close to an AA hall I attend. You know if you want you can e-mail me direct. Guest guest
I posted some information here not long ago about how stress and other things can cause a lack of magnesium in the body. It said that the best way to take it is powdered in hot water as a tea or mixed with a tea or juice. Does anyone still have the post or can it be found in the archives somewhere??? I was so impressed, because I had no idea that the lack of magnesium could cause so many problems in a body. I went to google and searched bulk magnesium citrate, and plan to order some. I think it comes in 1# packages. Elaine iris054 <clicker wrote: I've been having a bad time of it lately. My mother died the day after Mother's Day. Guest guest
From my own experiences i have come to the conclusion that stress is created within and you should always try to alter these internal forces first before thinking about altering the external one's as the external one's may not be as big as they appear to be whilst suffering anxiety and stress. Altering the situation aroud you is a bit like running from the problem.I am not generalizing here to everyones situation but just reflecting upon my own anxiety history.I used to believe that my business was killing me with the large workload and the pressure of keeping up with the tax's and never-ending expenses but the truth is that i actualy have a simple little business that is very managable and can make me very happy with my achievements. You need to believe that the positive steps you make are easy one's My biggest achievements in life have always bean easy only because of my attitude at the time.I have also had many failures as well. I have been to hospital in the back of an Ambulance and had the numerous internal scans and the muscle spasms and the heart palputations and the sleepless nights spent waiting for your bodys organs to fail.you name the symptom and ive had it. What i have done of recent to reverse things. Minnimise the coffee intake to perhaps 1 a day.(none is better) Mueslie in morning with light soy milk. I have learnt all the good lunch shops where to find a nice salad role ,instead of the KFC or McDonalds for lunch i used to have. Eat fruit for snacks And have a good healthy dinner Take it easy on the dairy products. My supplements are A teaspoon of Bee Poleen three times a day.(crunch it in the mouth) Skullcap twice a day. (liquide) Liver tonic twice a day.(liquide) Magnesium and Potasium twice a day (capsule) Zinc once a day.(liquide) and my Kava Kava Mixture that i carry with me and use about three times a day in small doses only. I also take saw palmetto and a few other vitamins each day but they are just for general health. I also go to the gym and take the dog for bushwalks as often as possible. excercise is a crucial part of my treatment. I think one of the greatest contributers to my own anxiety problems was an over use of alcohole. alcohole creates a whirlewind that is the perfect enviroment for stress or anxiety. The problem is that alcohol is great for relaxing at the end of a stressful day but one of the worst side effects of alcohole is it lessens your tolerence levels so therefore the next day you will be more prone to suffer from outside influences.by the end of that day a drink would be the best thing to unwind with, and so on. I still drink a little but i choose my times a little more carefully now. As i said this is just a small bit about my own situation and i hope it may be of some use to some of those who experience this on a first or second hand basis,my wife was the second party of my anxiety and she is now benifiting largly from my self perscribed treatment. And the best part of it all is that I feel like a new person. Guest guest
Thanks, Elaine. That was one thought I'd had, that perhaps the stress had depleted minerals in my body. I just took a calcium- magnesium pill (all I have), and I'll see if that improves the situation. Guest guest
Hi Tom, and thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm neither a coffee, milk, nor alcohol drinker -- my favorite beverage is water and sometimes juices. I normally handle things pretty well, but there's times in everyone's lives where stress from outside sources can be pretty intense and definitely not in our control (like death and robbery). Your words were thought provoking, though, and I'm glad you've found relief. Keep up the good work! Melinda
