remedies for anxiety

can anyone suggest whats best to take for anxiety and depression?

i have been looking through a vitamin bible book, but if i stuck to

what they suggest i would be a walking chemist, the doctor gave me

anti-depressants but i dont want to take them, i have tried st johns

wart aswell, my eating habits are terrible aswell so im going to

change that to a more healthier diet, as my mother keeps saying its

what im eating is not helping, any suggestions anyone?

BTW just found that maybe Kava Kava would work!

just dont want to go out and buy lots of remedies then they dont work.

#1: you are male/female.

#2: Your age is?

#3: Just what does your diet consist of? Honestly!

#4: What, if any, medications are you taking for any reason?

#5: Do you use alcohol, drugs, tobacco?

#6: What is your exercise regimen like if any?

#7: What are your symptoms and what makes you think you suffer from anxiety and/or depression?

#8: What other physical & /or mental problems do you suffer from if any?

#9: Are you overweight? Anorexic?

 

I would not even attempt to prescribe any kind of herb/EO/Homeo remedy unless I knew more about you and your condition.

-sorry yes im female age 33, my diet consists of anything quick ie

bread mainly, dont eat a great deal but when i am hungry i just make

a sandwich and junk food like biscuits and crisp,

No im not on any medication at the moment but i should be on anti-

depressants for anxiety there called " seroxat " i took 1 tablet and i

couldnt take anymore as they made me very panicky.

i dont drink alchol or drugs but i do smoke about 20 cigs a day

i dont have any exersise whatsoever, im to nervous to go out side.

Well i have suffered with depression/anxiety for 7 years since i had

my little boy, it started with a panic attack then over the years its

led to phobias and depression, the depression isnt too bad, i get

deressed because i cant live a normal life ie. go out

socializing,shopping, you know everyday things, im ok when im with

someone, but not on my own, just a total fear i have, im waiting to

see a CPN nurse soon aswell.

so the main problem i have is nervousness and anxious with depression.

hope this makes sense.

Okay. Let's see if we can refine this down just a little bit more.

1. How long have you been eating like this?

2. Forgive my ignorance, but what is crisp?

3. Realize that you are the healer here.

4. No need to go outside to exercise.

5. Realize, too, that it took you quite a few years to get into the condition you are now in. Don't expect miracles over night.

6. I would strongly suggest your changing your diet to a more natural one of fresh or steamed veggies, fresh fruits, more whole grains and whole grain breads. I would suggest you quit eating refined foods but not all at once. It would be too much shock on the system. Slowly start phasing them out. If you fry any foods use as little oil as possible and use a good quality oil (Extra Virgin Olive Oil or any other good quality cold pressed oil).

7. Changing your diet, over time, will have a great effect on your overall mental/physical health.

8. Start doing yoga, stretching exercises, or aerobics in your own home. It will do wonders for you. You don't need to exercise for long periods of time either. Just set yourself aside about 1/2 hour either in the early morning or just before bed when all is quiet and you can spend some time with just you.

9.Yes, I could tell you some herbs to take but they are only a stop gap measure. You need to take control of your life and make the necessary changes. From what you have told me so far I would say that changing your diet and getting some exercise would go further to helping your condition than any remedy I could or anyone else could offer.

10. Learn to appreciate yourself for who you are and realize that no one of us is perfect. We all have our problems to contend with.

 

I will tell you that I was pretty much in the same boat as you were up until about 5 years ago. Then I decided that I was tired of it and was going to end it all. For some reason I didn't. I took control of my life and believe me it was an uphill battle. At first I was on all the anti-depressants (Paxil, Trazadone, etc.). After 6 months of those I threw them all out because I didn't like the effect they were having on me. About 3 years ago I gave up alcohol, tobacco, and radically changed my eating habits. 2 years ago I took up stretching exercises and walking 3 miles every day. I now eat only veggies (either fresh or steamed, sometimes stir fried), fresh fruits, whole grain breads, whole grains (Brown rice, wild rice, barley, oats, etc.), fresh sprouts, seafood (once in a while). I drink lots of water with fresh lemon added, have cut way down on coffee and tea, drink more herbal teas, do not drink any sodas. Drink lots of fruit juices (preferrably fresh). I also eat lots of seeds and nuts, but try to stay away from roasted. I still have a long ways to go but am much happier, healthier, and my body is in the best shape it has been in since I was in my early twenties. I am now 49 years of age. No, I am not a practitioner of any healing modality. I am a student working towards my Master Herbalist Certification and Certification in Aromatherapy. I have a very strong belief that no man can heal another. Only you can heal you. If you are interested in continuing this and or wish for more information or more help or whatever, just let me know. Thanks for the advice

I have been eating like this for a long time as i dont really have

much of an appetite but when i am hungry i will eat anything thats

there just to take the hunger away, crisp are a snack (potatoe chips)

i think, Once i have changed my diet how long will it take for me to

feel better in myself? and should i get any vitamins?--- In

I will be totally honest with you; you will get out of it what you are willing to put into it. How badly do you want good physical, emotional, mental health? Bad enough to do whatever needs to be done? Realize that I am not prescribing anything here. I am not a doctor or an herbalist or anyother "ist" at this time. Only you can heal yourself. No other person alive can heal you. Only you can heal you. The best any healer can do is treat symptoms. You have to want to change. It doesn't matter how long it takes. It takes as long as it takes. I am not trying to be cruel or mean, I am just being totally honest with you. Probably the first thing you need to start working on is your attitude towards life and yourself. Start finding the positive in everything. Learn to overlook the negative. Society is too full of negativity. Let go of it and dwell on the positiveness. You can start to feel better in as little as maybe 6 months. You have to realize that it has taken you 33 years to get where you are today. Do not expect your problems to go away over night. You have to work at it and stay with it. Yes, I would recommend good quality supplements, as our food stuffs today lack the necessary vitamins and minerals that they used to have. We can thank the advance of chemicals fertilizers, inseticides, herbicides and over farming for that. I do mean good quality vitamins. The whole point here is to get involved with yourself. Begin to like yourself. You are a beautiful person. God does not make junk.

How and when you eat is totally up to you. I would suggest that when you get hungry reach for the celery or a carrot or some fruit instead of high carb/high fat junk foods. Yes, you are going to go through some hard times. But eventually down the road, maybe in a year or two you will see such positive results within yourself and it will all seem so much easier. Feel free to email me personally if you wish. We all need support from friends or groups. No man is an island. I am not doing anyone any good if I cannot help them by giving advice, guidance, support, or just a friendly smile whether they think they need one or not. I will be more than happy to help you, or anyone else, through this. I have been through it and I know what goes on. I am still going through it as it is a lengthy process. But I figure why should I keep doctors and herbalists, and naturopaths, and all the other "ists" and "aths" playing golf and driving fancy cars. I can better spend my money healing myself and educating myself and I am enjoying it much, much more. Be in peace and light. Actually, nothing works against anxiety and depression. No one substance you

can take will ever have a possibility of permanently handling this problem.

 

That's a horrible thing to say, isn't it? Unfortunately what has been found so

far, is that most things, either herbal or pharmaceutical, don't work. Kava

Kava is especially dangerous -- it is on the borderline of being a drug, and it

can cause liver damage in some circumstances.

 

And yet, paradoxically, changing diet, doing moderate exercise, and getting into

a different environment will work in many cases. It's just that with these

techniques, there is no " one size fits all " remedy. Instead, one can go out on

a true adventure in getting to know exactly what foods & vitamins feel best,

making new friends who don't bring you down, and moving the body in new ways

that feel great.

 

Most cases of anxiety and depression have more to do with spiritual factors.

And although most of us have never been trained to think this way, it turns out

that communication is essentially a spiritual phenomenon. (Language is a

physical phenomenon.) I can guarantee, from what you have said so far, that

someone around you has communicated things to you that caused you to feel

terrible about some aspect of living. If you find that person, and substitute a

more wholesome and cheerful person in your life, that may do wonders, where all

of the chemicals and herbs have consistently failed.

I believe " Seroxat " is either Prozac or Paxil under another name. Very

dangerous stuff. Some people have been known to go out and commit murders after

taking either of these. There is a reason why this happens.

 

Not being able to go out for simple exercise is a problem. Perhaps there are TV

shows you could exercise to?

 

Is your son living with you?

 

Tobacco is a very interesting factor. There is a lot to know about it. Among

Native Americans, its use had deep spiritual implications and was connected to

the religion of almost every tribe. One of my favorite quotes is from a

Chippewa medicine man named Sun Bear, who was a teacher for a while. He said,

" Every time you smoke, say a prayer. Soon, you will either be doing a lot less

smoking, or a lot more praying. " It is true that prayer was always associated

with smoking, and i find that this helps a great deal, no matter what your

religion. Another thing about tobacco, is that cigarette butts are customarily

disposed of by squeezing out the remaining tobacco on to the ground, usually at

a place that you feel should be blessed. Then the filter and/or remaining paper

is put in the trash. That's a legitimate modern custom that i've run into in

many areas.

No im not on any medication at the moment but i should be on anti-

someone, but not on my own, just a total fear i have, im waiting to

see a CPN nurse soon aswell.

so the main problem i have is nervousness and anxious with depression.

I have been reading the responses to this person's questions and I have

been enjoying them. There's good stuff here =)

I have found that when I get depressed or run down that I need a change. It

will usually happen all at once, I feel horrible, I don't have the energy

to do 1000 things today, and I don't care. Maybe that's nature's way to say

slow down, rest, flush your system out and live again. Look at your

passions. I know when I get depressed, I've found that it is the 'daily

drudge' of life that put me there. Chores, laundry, dishes, work, etc. Its

OK to take a day off, paint that piece of furniture a wild color, pack up

those kids and take off and go do something. Go to the park and take a

walk. Your kids will love it. Make yourself a salad with balsamic vinegar,

garlic, crushed pepper and mustard. Have a glass of herbal tea and some

watermelon. Read an up lifting book for even just 15 minutes. Take time for

yourself. Go through all of those ratty winter clothes that are still in

your closet and get yourself a new shirt, even if you just pop in the

salvation army or thrift store. Plant something. Go to a petting zoo with

your child and see all of the baby animals. Turn off the tv and put on some

fun bopping music and put on loose and airy clothes and dance around. I

have found just a few minutes of 'selfish acts' are the best gift to give

myself. And BABY STEPS. Take changes slowly. Go through your house and

throw away the yucky stuff, and put some cherries and apples in a bowl. Cut

up some raw veggies and put them in bowl in the refrigerator. And put some

fresh flowers in a vase on your table, and light a candle when you are

down. Those little things will give you then energy and ambition to do the

big steps.

I am off to do chores, I have lots of hungry animals looking a the house!

Hello, I just discovered this forum. I'm a strong believer in herbs and have

been using many herbs and supplements for the past four years. I have depression

and anxiety disorder and let me say for the record that I will NEVER take any

prescription meds. I just can't believe how many people are pawns, being sucked

into this harmful $$$$ making business. Here is my experience with anti-anxiety

herbs. The first one I used was Valerian. It worked very well for reducing

anxiety, but also made me too drowsy. I will say it is great for insomnia. After

that, I started taking Kava and have been for three years now. I only use it

strting at the end of the day as I don't want to be too relaxed during the daily

routine. For me, it's also an alternative to alcohol. I don't drink as much beer

as I used to, but still do on weekend nights. Obviously, I never take Kava on

the same days that I drink. BTW, I believe this whole liver damage thing was

introduced out of context and probably has something to do with the drug

companies. Those who had liver damage had either pre existing conditions or were

foolish enough to mix it with alcohol. Even though I don't mix the two, my

anxiety had me get a complete blood count test done anyway. My liver functions

were in the middle of normal range. (Think the Milk Thistle also has something

to do with that.) Anyway, Kava has been very helpful for me. Lately, my

depression and anxiety have been made a little worse, probably due to my

mother's situation with worsening Alzheimer's. The Kava has been making me

drowsy and not helping much with the increased anxiety. I have recently made a

great discovery..... Scullcap!! This herb is too much overlooked, probably why I

didn't give it any serious thought before. I started taking it instead of Kava

and it helps so much more. It gives such a nice feeling, drives away the

depression and unwanted thoughts, and doesn't make me drowsy. I have the

Nature's Way brand because I have alot of trust in their products. I can't say

enough about Scullcap. I'm glad I discovered this group and look forward to

sharing and hearing more herb info.
