I'm not new to this group, but I stay pretty quiet, more of a learner than a teacher....I know most the problems on here relay to humans, but I'mm going to ask anyway....., I have an 8 year old miniature schnauzer who just this last January had her 2nd surgery in 4 years to remove a stones from her bladder that are common to her breed of dog. I don't remember the name of the stones, except that they are common. (something like strachulite) ?...

The first time she had the surgery 4 years ago, they put her on this dog food, Science Diet prescription CD, and I'm not knocking the dog food, but it obviously didn't work or she wouldn't have needed the surgery again....do any of you know of a herbal remedie I can give her , even if it's daily for the rest of her life, as long as she has a good quality of life, that's all I care about, something that will keep these stones from re-occuring ? or am I stuck using a overpriced prescription dogfood I can only purchase from the vet, that I've already found out from past experience, doesn't stop the process of developing stones, but only slows it down...

any information will be appreciated...

thank you in advance

My husband had kidney stones - and a friend of mine (who is on this list) had a cat that had stones - and both husband and cat where put on a blend of gravel root and corn silk.......both are doing fine - it isn't a quick fix, it took a month or so to take care of things, there used to be blood in the urine, but both are doing fine......as for Science Diet.........I dunno, I would try and find some sort of natural, home made diet for kidney stones.......kibble is NOT the answer IMHO.....

I feed my 2 dogs a all natural raw food diet with supplements. Their primary meat source is Pheasant and then I feed ground chicken, turkey and beef. They also get fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese, vitamins, and I also add organic raw apple cider vinegar. My oldest is 10 and a Golden Retriever, since the diet change his hasn't had any seizures. I also stopped vaccinating and that's including the rabies. It has been almost 4 years since any kind of shots. My dogs are doing so well eating this way! They are more active, their teeth are white, their skin and coat is pink and silky soft. Also, I feel that diet has alot to do with the ailments that dogs get and also the vaccinations, too.

Well, I hope I helped some. Let me know.

usually I lurk too, but wanted to add a bit here. I have two cats. One lives in the barn, on her own. She gets a treat of goat milk once in a while, but otherwise she eats what nature (and her skill) provide. I also have one cat in the house and he eats regular bagged dry cat food. Nothing else. This spring I took them both to the vet on the same day, the boy (inside) was going to be nuetered and the girl (outside) needed a rabies shot. With my kids around that cat all the time too I wanted to be safe rather than sorry.

While the vet was examining the outside cat I got comments like "wonderful, clean teethher fur is so soft and fine" and she's just the right weight and she's so alert! The only "downside" comment the vet made was, "You can even smell that barn on her!". And her ears were total clear of mites and dirt.

When the inside cat was being examined I got,"he's bit overweight", "you should think about having his teeth cleaned", and "at least he's calm" (really the goofy thing was scared stiff I think). He had a terrible case of earmites that I had to treat for weeks and now that he's nuetered he's getting even heavier.

So, it's only personal observation, but if you can switch to a more natural diet your dog will feel better.

oh yeah, if you're interested in this doggie diet it's called BARF- Biologically Appropriate Raw Food- and there are a couple really good lists on to help you get information and get started feeding. There's also a good meat rabbit list to help with where to get raw food reasonably.
