Hi everyone,

I just joined the group and was wondering if anyone knew of good

alternative therapies for allergies. My husband and son get terrible

hay fever which often develop into sinusitis. We've already put

allergy covers on mattresses adn pillows, vaccuum often and try to

stay indoors on windy days, but I can't help feeling that there must

be some way to " persuade " the immune system that pollen and dust are

innocuous. My little boy drinks a herbal punch with eyebright and

some adrenal-supporting herbs, and that seems to help, but I'd

appreciate any new ideas. Has anyone used homeopathy to deal with

allergies?

Thanks,

Marita

Hi Marita,

For quite a few years I suffered with hay fever every spring. The

last few years I haven't had any problems. I first used bee

pollen--which I am told that some people may be allergic to; but it

worked for me. Later I used oil of oregano-- this worked even better

for me. I have also used barley green successfully. I think you will

have to try different things and find out what works in your husband a

son's case. Maybe Dr Ian has some ideas to share with us on this

matter.---Glenda

Marita,

Check into MSM. I have allergies and started taking it about 3 weeks ago and it has helped tremendously. I also know of 2 people that take it for joint pain and one said her asthma is better and the other has noticed she doesn't have her usual springtime allergy symptoms.

What is MSM? does it stand for something? If I go to our

health food store and ask for MSM will they know what I

mean?

Thanks,

Lori,

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane. It is a naturally occurring organic form of dietary sulfur and is found in a lot of foods but is easily lost in processing. There is an article in the files under pictures and profiles on MSM. The health food store will know what you're asking for.

Michael's idea on local honey made me think of bee pollen, also. I've also heard of people drinking raw milk from local grass fed cows that felt relief. I tried the bee pollen and it did okay for me. I try not to eat sugar on a regular basis, so I couldn't get enough honey to make a difference. The MSM has been the best for me, so far.

I would imagine Doc's total body cleanse and total nutrition program would also do the trick. I plan on doing it this summer, so hopefully next fall, I'll be allergy free!

Hope this helps,

Ann

Homeopathy is one of the greatest ways to deal with this. I've used it a

lot. There is a homeopathic trick that works with a lot of people (but not

everyone) -- that's to obtain some LOCAL honey and use it. This works

because the honey contains homeopathic bits of many allergens, which

stimulates the immune system gently. You can't use it on infants, since

they are generally slightly allergic to honey anyway. That usually passes

at about the age of 2.

Another thing that sometimes works is weak chamomile tea. Foenugreek has

been known to work for some people. In other words, allergies tend to be

very individual.

I've never had allergies, so what I have to say is just from what I know

from a friend's experience.

Many years ago a friend of mine had such bad allergies, he needed to be put

in an oxygen tent for about 2 to 3 weeks every year along with daily allergy

shots.

At a cocktail party at my house, one of my neighbors, who was in her 80's,

told him to eat two large spoonfuls of raw honey grown locally. My neighbor

across the street raised bees, so he was really in luck.

She recommended the honey be stuff collected during the time he had his

worst symptoms. Now this was during mid to late spring when honey flow is

not very high, but he was able to get enough to carry him through a year.

He ate both the honey and a part of the comb, which he chewed like gum.

The first spring following, he was able to stay out of the hospital, but

still required shots, pills and an inhaler. However the second year, he had

no signs of allergies.

He kept eating honey and never suffered from allergies again.

I have heard other people who have tried similar things with varying

success, so I am not sure this is fool-proof. However, I am also not sure

they were eating honey collected during the " high aggravation " period.

But raw unfiltered honey is loaded with pollen. I think honey for your area

is very important. That is to say getting raw honey from Arizona when you

live in Michigan, would likely have no effect because your son does not have

any sensitivity to the Arizona pollens. Also, the timing of the honey

collection would be important since it is during those times the plants are

producing the pollen your son is allergic to.

Certainly, once you found a supply, the hard part, all you would need to do

is keep it on the kitchen table and make it a part of breakfast or an

afternoon snack.

MSM= methylsulfonylmethane, which means everyone but chemists call it MSM

Often it is grouped with Glucosimine for joint pains and can be found both

as a topical cream and oral capsules

Thanks for the ideas. Someone I know used bee pollen too and I

remember him mentioning that you had to take it before the allergens

started appearing in the spring. Is this true?
