spammer our offending anyone?

Dear ...,

This is an educational group, and as such there is NO advertising of one's wares as per the list policies. One of the main purposes of the list is the FREE dissemination of Knowledge, so you are welcome to post your experiences and contribute help where you feel you can.

Thank you for not just blasting away with an 'ad' as some in the past have done.

Love,

Doc

This is a very tough question. The biggest problem is that so many people

who came along before you did, were so abusive in their marketing practices,

that many otherwise good places, such as this list, are now closed to marketing.

There are basically three broad classes of email marketing techniques.

SPAM -- the lowest level, where you get addresses any way you can, and spew

out unsolicited mail. Most folks think that those who do this are a species

of subhuman. The success rate of these programs is unknowable, since people

who do this have to hide themselves. (As an aside, the two people who

invented SPAM, a pair of immigration lawyers, did not do so well. One is

dead, and the other is no longer a lawyer.)

Opt-In List Marketing -- you partner up with organizations that have

collected addresses of people who have consented to receive mail

solicitations from that organization, and buy into the lists. Effectiveness

of this has not been fully established, but there have been a few successes.

Affinity Marketing -- This is the most difficult. You hang out on various

list communities, get known to the people, and some of them drift over to

you privately. At that point, you can give them your full message.

Besides that, you can build links with other sites which drive traffic to

yours. This has been proven to be effective. If someone offers to

cross-link their site with yours, and you fundamentally think they're ok

people and compatible with your beliefs, you should always take them up on it.

You should build up your own list, and mail to it at least three times a

year. I found the AskSam software to be the best for this purpose.

Best way to keep in touch with what's going on in this area, is to

to DM News. Most subscriptions are free. It's a weekly newspaper. This is

a treasure trove of news, hints, and ideas for marketers like us. Try a Web

search on " Direct Marketing Association " for the address.

Dear Zip,

Tried it and it didn't work.

All hell broke loose and we veered away from the list purpose which is education and research.

Any of us can contact an individual direct if we wish to purchase someone's product. And by reading about those who make their own we can get a good idea who does and who doesn't market or sell their products. I like the list like it is - education, research and sharing information. Thanks doc.
