Trance Drumming?

Michael mentioned rythm, then Clove mentioned " trance drumming " , an

expression which I've never heard before, and asked about it's

correlation to the heartbeat.

A friend and I went to a Native American potlatch up in the woods

several years ago. Someone had brought a HUGE drum, and several folks

sat drumming on it, continuing a particular rythm for a long time. It

was hypnoticly relaxing, and very enjoyable. When I stood up after

awhile, I felt almost as if I'd been drugged, but without the nasty

side effects. I've never experienced anything like it before or

since, but if I knew where to go hear it again, I'd be there. This

wonderful drumming imparted a sense of peace that stayed with me for

hours afterwards.

I've been curious to know more about it ever since. What happened to

me and the others there? Does this rythm alter the heartbeat or the

brainwaves? Is it good for you?

Hi Melinda. I would love to have the answers to those questions as well. I

have had a lot of experience with ritual drumming and have found that

certain rhythms will induce very different responses.(from soothing to

violent to sexual) I too have experienced " drumming high " and have wondered

aside from the rhythm itself, what exactly is altered and at what level.

Obviously there is an energy exchange between the drummers and the

listeners/dancers, but beyond that....

Growing curiouser and curiouser....especially since I use music as a regular

part of my healing. Without music on some level I just feel numb.

Clove

Apparently drumming will modify all types of body processes. The most

noticeable effects seem to be on the heartbeat and on brain waves. My own

suspicion is that eventually we will find that there are precise effects

that can be generated by certain rhythms. I have so far worked out only a

preliminary classification, which is not yet ready for full release.

Besides, something like this really needs to be an audio presentation. I am

toying with the idea of putting together an audio tape similar to my 1994

" Fundamentals of Harmonic Chemistry " release that would demonstrate these

rhythms. Not sure if there would be sufficient market for such a product to

justify the large number of hours that would be necessary to put it together.

I enjoy your comment about not feeling right without music. Historically,

very few societies have ever tried to live without music. All of these were

short-lived. The most recent was the Taliban of Afghanistan.

A corollary to this is, be wary of anyone who does not have music in their

lives. It has been my experience that many who are indifferent to music,

are very dangerous people.
