Menopause :(

Dear Doc.. and Listmates...

I have checked the files and found some menopausal formulas. So far I have never created a homemade brew or put together a "recipe." I have no idea how to go about this. For example where the formulas call for one part of this or that.... can I do this from liquid tinctures and blend them together? I have absolutely no experience with this.. only have purchased herbs from the health food store ... and only in capsule or tea form.

I have been going though menopause for a few years I would say. :( Does anyone remember the episode from All in the Family with Edith Bunker? Welllllll... I think I lost the Mrs. Congeniality award. At times I can be moody.. irritable ... prone to depressions.. anger (which I NEVER remember having) and basically not all that charming LOL. Sleep disorders as well. I think my husband put the whammy on me when he would brag to everyone how I slept like a log. Now..he probably fantasizes about running away from home- ha! Previously, I was a fairly calm ... pleasant person ..really it's true!!! :) ..and I miss that person! I started breaking out in hot flashes a couple of years ago and bought some Dong Quai Root in capsule form...works great for the hot flashes... they're gone. I take one a day about 500 mg or a bit more. A little goes a long way with me..It is best I always start in small doses and work up. That is the only herb I take for female related disorders. My cycle is also completely off now..and so it has been for the last year..

Before I found this list .... Three months ago I had reached a point of having to do"something" for a couple of symptoms I will omit from this post. I was told to open a capsule of the natural progesterone I received and mix it in a body lotion I could tolerate (fragrance free of course)..applying a little bit every day for 25 days ..then off for 5. I'm not so sure this is the way to go. It did help with one of my symptoms immensely which was fantastic.. but as for my personality and mood.. nothing. I do not know what my hormonal levels are.

Suggestions? If I should try one of the formulas in the files ... not sure how to put it together. Otherwise...any other single herbs I should add to my daily regime as well as the Dong Quai Root in capsule form? Shopping via the internet or a catalog is preferable for me since buildings can be difficult because of my chemical sensitivities as well as location of health food stores.

If you feel I need to do some reading before asking some of these questions.... any particular book you would recommend on preparing and learning about herbal formulations?

Alrighty... thanks much...Learning here... Beth

Dear Doc..

Well.. Jean Stapletons portrayal of Edith Bunker experiencing menopause was very memorable and so well done! Loved it when she called "Archie" a meathead" ha!...was really hysterical. Doc I will check the files on making tinctures I must have missed it. Yes...Thanks.. will give you a call soon. Beth :)

I remember that episode from "All in the Family". What a hoot. Not very funny when it happens to you, but it was amusing at the time even though it was sooooooooooo real.

I can see I have more work to do on the files, but there should also be a section in there that tells you how to make a tincture. Let your fingers do the walking through the files there hon and call me if you need any specific advice. I'm always willing to help a 'newbie' get going ;o)

Love,

Doc
