Guest guest
Check out the Total Body Cleanse in the files. This is emphatically what I'd recommend for you. Hi Doc... Thanks! I'm reading it over now. I have been told that you shouldn't take Echinacea for more than three weeks as you stated in the files. What is the story with Astragalus root? Can and should that be taken daily to help my system? I've been wondering about that one for a while. Someone (mainstream med so I don't know if that info is reliable) told me the same rules apply to Astragalus, Goldenseal, and Olive Root as to Echinacea....only to be taken for short duration. Is that so? Since my NK cells are low..and I am prone to viral flare-ups...this area is one I need to focus on. My brain comes next Thanks Much.. Guest guest
Many herbs are limited in their duration of effectiveness. Basically, the body gets used to a particular herb, and after that there is no effect on a condition. I am most familiar with this pattern regarding Golden Seal and Echinacea. Both of those will definitely lose some effectiveness after about three days. That's why i tend to recommend a two days on / day off pattern in acute illnesses. With Echinacea, using it as an immune system booster and thus an illness preventative would seem to be a good idea. I tend to recommend not using it at all until there is a definite sign that sickness could be coming very soon. These signs would include known exposure to an illness such as flu, and constipation. Golden Seal is potent enough to where i don't recommend it as a preventative. Also, excess doses can temporarily increase the heart rate, which is an alarming but normally not harmful phenomenon. As for Astragalus, it is used more regularly among Chinese. It seems to help with diabetes in particular, but does also have reported actions against most acute flulike illnesses and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. I'm not at all familiar with Olive Root, and so can't comment on that. At 01:15 PM 12/11/01 EST, you wrote: > >Check out the Total Body Cleanse in the files. Guest guest
Thank you Michael. My pattern to date has been when I am confronted with a viral flareup usually I've had to continue herbal treatment for about 6 weeks...to become symptom free. That included Echinacea..perhaps the Echinacea wasn't necessary for that duration ..while continuing the others would be prudent.. I understand about the loss of effectiveness.....mostly regarding Echinacea.. but not much talk about the others until now. Beth Many herbs are limited in their duration of effectiveness. Guest guest
Dear Doc... Thank you very much! I am going to save this letter in my files for reference. I read about Astragalus a while back. .and couldn't believe how much better I felt talking it..so will start again Monday. Amazing how well I felt when I took just small amounts...of both the Astragalus and the Goldenseal. I have the Olive leaf but have yet to try it. PS.. I have read all the formulas.. and am working towards putting this all together. Thanks much ..... Beth Dear Beth, Astragalus, is a tremendous herb, right up there with Ginseng as the #1 Chinese herb. It balances metabolism (helps naturally with losing weight), balances blood sugar levels (vital for Diabetics and great for kids who've blitzed out on sugar), boosts the immune system and to a minor degree balances hormone levels. I recommend that everyone take some daily, and it is one of the main reasons it is in my Total Nutrition Formula. You can take Astragalus till the cows come home and the same goes for Goldenseal and Olive leaf (both in smaller quantities), but Echinacea you need to take a break from. Ideal with Echinacea is one week on, and one week off, but you can take it up to 3 weeks when doing some serious cleansing and detoxing. 3 weeks is the limit though. A good analogy would be the ignition and starter motor in your car. Once the engine is going you back off on the ignition so you don't burn out your starter motor. What's the point in holding the starter in the 'on' position, when the engine is already going??? Same goes for Echinacea. Once your immune system is fired up, you no longer need the herb to get it going. Since you experience viral flare ups, I'd say a daily dose of Astragalus is essential for you.
