Guest guest
Have any of you conquered gum disease, and how did you do it? Have you quit smoking (*my #1 problem - bad me!), and how did you do it? I have 3 teeth that are loose!!! My dentist says it's gum disease. I am *NOT* a slob, and I'm not stupid. I brush at least twice a day (have all my life). I use a sonic toothbrush. My gums don't bleed, aren't red or swollen, don't look funky. I floss when I remember (I've got to get better about that). I know that at least two of the teeth (they oppose each other) are both root canals, and I suspect the dentist didn't fit the crowns properly (and doesn't want to admit it). The third might also be a root canal (I know I have 3). I read on Mercola's site that root canals are bad news and you should have them pulled. If they're pulled, the best insurance coverage is for bridges... but I've talked to friends who say NO don't get bridges -- get implants. Implants cost about $3K each, and there's very little help thru insurance. I also read that Post Stress Disorder (from my abusive childhood) predisposes people to gum problems. I gnash my teeth in sleep and also when awake (so do both my sisters, interestingly). Dentist talked about a night guard -- I need a day guard too! Are there herbs or homeopathics that can help? Vitamins? I do kelp and alfalfa powder, bee pollen and MSM and C. He gave me a prescription for some chemical mouthwash... but can I do better? I've been reading about some herbal mouthwashes on the web, but don't know what would be good. Should I brush with peroxide? He said not for long if I do. Should I brush with baking soda and salt? He said a flouride toothpaste, but I already do that and there's so much written against and for flouride -- it's confusing! Does anyone have any experience/ideas/warnings for me please? I sure don't want to be facing a lot of pain and expense with this and loose my teeth. I go in for a cleaning on Dec. 11 and I want them to say " WOW! What did you do? It looks much better!! " OK, all you wonderful geniuses -- is there any way to accomplish this miracle? Thanks! Melinda
Guest guest
Well, I can add my .02 with this one. I first started by cutting down. I smoked about 1/2 pack a day and then went on the patch. This was more expensive then my cigarettes, so I was only on that for about a month. I had no cravings on the patch. I do hear that the gum works really well too. I haven't tried that. Anyway, popcycles help, gum, keeping as busy as I could. I learned to crochet to keep my hands busy. I did crochet a small blanket I also used a program for the computer. It's free at zdnet. It's called smoke free stats. That helped too. It keeps track and tells you how many cigarettes you haven't smoked, how much money saved, etc. I also set up point marks. The first week, a small present, the first month, something bigger and then at 6 months. It's been a year so far Good Luck, it takes a few tries sometimes, so even of you fall off the wagon, it's o.k. Buffered powdered vitamin C is the only vitamin C you should use. You use it to bowel tolerance, in other words increasing dosage a little everyday till you feel rumbly in your tummy and then back off to the day before's dosage. That's the amount " you " should be using. Now that will/may change with stress, and ect. This will be an important part of your trying to quit smoking, helping with stress and buffering your system. Because it isn't acidic it doesn't stress your system for you to use it. An acidic system is a sick system. Flouride is a bad thing, and will do nothing for tightening loose teeth, although too much will cause motteling, not to mention death. And I do not know about using peroxide when you have mercury in your mouth, it's worth checking into, it's a debated subject. If you don't have mercury there is nothing wrong with using it, for whitening or fighting infection. I know people who have had excellent results reversing gum disease using an oregano oil, MSM, and baking soda " paste " for toothpaste, can't tell you it tastes good tho, but it also helps keep the teeth whiter. I do not know if you can tighten teeth that are loose due to bad dental work or teeth that have had root canals, I do not know anyone with those experiences to share. My mother swears by Myrh for healthy gums. And last but not least anytime you are going after a healing, calcium is a VERY important thing to make sure you are getting enough of. A source you can actually assimalate, otherwise it's worthless to you. Hope some of that helps, blessings, holyroller > > I have 3 teeth that are loose!!! I forgot to add, I spoke to my daughters dentist a few years ago about her all of a sudden gnashing her teeth at night, he said all kids do and wasn't alarmed. I however do not see this as normal. I was told however many years before she was born, that it was caused due to a lack of good calcium. I have to admit that when I increased her calcium intake she stopped gnashing AND biting her nails, that was two years ago. Guest guest
Dear Melinda, You should make my Tooth & Gum formula as found in the files. This will do the trick. I've attached a success story from one of my patients. The stuff is awesome. Love, Doc PS. She never quit smoking throughout this time period, not that I recommend that you do smoke. ;o) Ian "Doc" Shillington N.D.505-772-5889Dr.IanShillington Have any of you conquered gum disease, and how did you do it? Have you quit smoking (*my #1 problem - bad me!), and how did you do it? Success Story When I moved to Clearwater in October, 1997, I had advanced periodontal disease. Very deep pockets existed in all of my teeth and I had been told by 3 dentists that I would lose all of my upper teeth and at least 4 of my lower teeth. In December, my friend Valorie (Doc's wife) gave me the tooth and gum formula to use on my gums. At the time I had a very deep and painful abscess in my upper gums extending into my sinus cavity. I swished one dropperful of tooth and gum formula around in my mouth and within 20 minutes the pain (that large doses of pain medication would not handle) was gone! I used the formula in this manner for the next couple of days along with Echinacea and the abscess was gone within 3 days. Daily over the next couple of months, I diluted the tooth and gum formula and used the water-pick. This was all in an effort to save some of the lower teeth. I still expected to lose all of the upper teeth and at least 4 of the lower ones. When I went to the dentist in April, 1998 to have a final evaluation and have the necessary teeth extracted, we discovered that all the pockets in the lower teeth had shrunk from 7, 8 and 9mm to the normal level of about 3 ½ mm and I was able to keep all of my bottom teeth. In addition I was also able to save 4 teeth on the top, saved myself $1500, and can now eat raw veggies which I love. I was astounded!! So was my dentist. In a nutshell this tooth and gum product tightened my gums, restored the bone loss and returned the above mentioned teeth and surrounding gums to a healthy state. Mary O Clearwater, Florida (The ingredients of the tooth and gum formula are Bayberry rootbark, Oak bark, Tea Tree oil, Echinacea root, Clove oil, Cayenne pepper and Peppermint oil.) I have a lot of vit C right now, with bioflavanoids, but I don't have a lot of budget to spend. Is this really necessary? How do you take the powdered C? Do you mix it with something? > And I do not know about using peroxide when you have mercury in your mouth, it's worth checking into, it's a debated subject. I've never heard anything about this. Guest guest
This is clearly one of the most difficult areas in our current medical system. I've been fighting this too, with sporadic victories, but have also lost a few teeth over the past three years. As a person who cannot get coverage or enough $$$ to do the dental thing, i've had to rely almost totally on herbs. Here are a few points that have come up, some due to a consultation with an honest dentist, some due to associating with Dr. Hal Huggins a few years ago. Inevitably, Huggins will be mentioned further on in this thread. First, flouride is a deadly poison, and should be avoided. That in itself can be difficult. The story of how it got into our toothpaste and water involves massive government corruption. Vicco toothpaste is pretty good, and can help a lot. Its formula is from India -- they call it Ayurvedic, but it's hard to square that with current information on that subject. In any event, it is worth checking the large number of health food stores you will have to visit before you find it. Auromere toothpaste is a similar formula, but a little weaker. I believe that using these has delayed the tooth losses i suffered. Peroxide is useful occasionally, but if used constantly will do more harm than good. Honest dentists are beginning to agree that root canals are a useless procedure. The best herbal mouthwashes use prickly ash bark as the main ingredient. Alcohol based mouthwashes, which are the most common ones available at supermarkets, are overall very harmful. Avoid anything with tea tree oil. Maybe it's good for somebody's teeth somewhere, but those of us with gum disease are likely to get worse with it. My gums always flare up worse whenever i have meals with too much cheese. Simply avoiding it for a few days, along with taking Vitamin C, tends to tame them. Gum problems seem to get much worse with Candida infections, so any remedy against that should help. Chewing Hyssop has been a great help. When my gum problems are at their worst, and nothing else was working, eating a pinch of Golden Seal would usually do the trick. Also a good alcohol-based Echinacea tincture would help a lot. As for quitting smoking, licorice root has helped some, but i tend to keep going back to tobacco. And licorice root can aggravate the gums if kept there for too long at night. And i probably lost those teeth because i'm not really great at sticking to an ideal diet. Hope this is helpful. There are several other herbs that are supposed to be good, but they are very rare and i haven't been able to find them. Back in 1980 i obtained a very fascinating privately published book on dental health, and it did form a foundation for knowledge in this area. Wish it were more widely circulated. Guest guest
Don't know about albrite at all. Will have to check on that. I'm not a retirees -- that makes the situation worse. I just work really hard & don't get paid much usually. Yes, they always say a little bit won't hurt. Yes, many chemical poisons can be cumulative. Another factor is that people will demonstrate varying levels of sensitivity to these from one time to another, depending on many things. Oxyfresh depends on chlorine dioxide, which has many similar chemical actions to hydrogen peroxide. So while it does work well for a time, i have noticed that constant use can weaken the gums a bit. My honest dentist friend said that for all practical purposes they are the same in their actions on gums and teeth, for both better and worse. Hydrogen peroxide does tend to weaken the enamel if used a lot. Yes, what you said about root canals is true. Also the procedure can jam various toxins into the roots, and leave seeds for later infections whenever someone is weakened, which these days can happen any time to anyone. Alcohol weakens the gums. What they use in mouthwashes is a more complex and thick alcohol, called cetyl alcohol, but it has the same effect. Chewing hyssop is just like chewing a wad of dry grass, but with an interesting peppery flavor. So it's all chewable. Sometimes a bit hard to find, but i have a very good bulk herbs source here in town. Mostly i get licorice root in chunks and just suck on a couple small chunks for an hour or so. Really helps the lungs and reduces cravings for nicotine. There are a few pastille products with it in health food stores, and most of the Chinese pill remedies have it as an ingredient because it tends to activate other medicines. Guest guest
This is personal experience. I found tea tree oil to be irritating -- which is of course of great value when it is used for antiseptic purposes. Your experience is an interesting bit of data. Wish we had time to follow up & find out if there is any correlation between using tea tree oil on the gums and getting benefits from it, and whether or not a person has diabetes. I also have a suspicion that tea tree oil may help against candida in some cases. That can cause gum problems too. Guest guest
Since i don't actually see patients, i will have to defer to your experience. But i really did have a huge problem with three different preparations containing Tea Tree Oil, and so stopped using it for gums. But i will use it for lots of other things.
