If she's unmanageable to the point of a problem, or needs calming while getting

to the root of the problem, then that's ok, if not you may be looking for a

band-aid; just like prozac works for some people (but with more probable side

effects), it calms anxiety and depression, but your body is not deficient in

prozac, nor valerian or scullcap, nor kava, nor catnip! Thay all may make her

more manageable and tolerable of her daily functions, but they are only

temporary " fixes " until you correct the chemical imbalance, diet, etc..

I am new to this list and anxious to help my 5 year old daughter who

is a very anxious person.

I have been using sporadically at bedtime a mixture I bought

containing Valerian and skullcap. I use the dosage recommended for

children. She suffers from nighttime anxiety and disturbed sleep.

This isn't all the time, just when she is having a stressful time in

her life. She has vivid nightmares unless I give her some drops of

this mixture at bedtime.

I wonder if there is a more appropriate way to manage her behavior

problem. She is starting school for the first time and naturally

anxious but her disturbed sleep is making coping even tougher on her

during the day.

Any advice?

We have just cycled through a lot of info on ADD and ADHD which would be

pertenant to anxiety. This can be

found in the archives. Be sure her diet doesn't contain sugars. and try to

eliminate all additives. (I know,

tough job, but they prevent the brain as well as the rest of the body from

functioning properly). Incourage her

to talk about her fears and try to reassure her.

Make her a sleep pillow containing catnip and lavender and, if you have it, a

small amount of mugwort.

Make sure she drinks plenty of good water, and take a good hard look at her diet

in general.

Hi Lynne, welcome to this list.

I would say chances are there is something underlying

this anxiety- some incident, situation, perhaps your

own anxiety, maybe several issues- which is probably

what you need to address for any long term solution.

It has to have some cause, and as Steve I think it was

said, her state is not caused by a lack of valerian

etc.

I agree to get her off sugar and onto a really good

diet (hard with young kids I know, I have young kids

too) and make sure she is getting enough protein.

A regular, quite strict routine can help children feel

secure. For example, in the evening, a routine of

bath- dinner- cleaning teeth- story- snuggle/ massage-

lights out, in the same order every night- whatever

order works for you, can really help getting kids into

bed. I learnt this from the Steiner people and it was

great with my kids. I even have a poster up for their

morning getting ready for school routine with pictures

and words, and it has helped no end take the stress

out of mornings. It can take a lot of anxiety out of a

child to know what is happenning next all the time, so

communicating ahead of time what is happenning, when

you are going out, what school will be like etc, so

she is not exposed to 'shocks', and her world is not

so overwhelming.

There is a wonderful book called the Continuum Concept

i recommend to all parents, about how to bring kids up

so they are really secure and become independant- by

not forcing them to become independant before they are

ready. It is based on the authors experience living

with a native tribe somewhere, she learnt how we have

been reared for thousands of years exept very

recently, and how this is still genetically programed

into us. This book had a profound impact on my

parenting, and my husband's, and is a classic in among

'attachment parenting' people.

Herbs may help, and valerien and skullcap are good,

but I would tend more toward a nightly ritual of a cup

of camomile tea, or warm milk.

I dont know if you ever slept with her when she was a

baby, but if not it may really help her to feel

secure. i dont know your situation. I am presuming she

doesnt have some serious biochemical or psychological

problem, and it is more an emotional issue, or

somethng has happenned in her life since birth to

disturb her.

Anyway, theres a few ideas.

love
