Guest guest
I have to jump in here. We had this same experience with our eldest. She was sugar-free until her third Christmas, and although very alert and active, ahe was bright and funny, her temper was sweet and even. That third winter, someone gave her a candy cane, and she went ballistic. Her face changed, she became belligerent, would not talk, but ran around , unreponsive and mean. Jekyll and Hyde is a perfect description - one that I used myself. I wish I could say that I picked up on the candy right away, but I didn't. We suffered these mood swings and outbursts for another year and a half before an answer to prayer (yes, prayer) revealed that her great-grandfather had not been able to tolerate corn at all. I started looking at labels again, and found corn syrup in almost everything - ketchup, bread, hot dogs, cereals, juice " drinks " - not just candy. Some of these foods she ate only away from home, at a party or friend's house, which explained her poor behavior in a crowd. When we eliminated all corn from her diet, she became even-tempered again. After about 5 years of no corn at all, we were able to introduce small amounts of the vegetable into her diet. Now that she is a senior in high school, she avoids sodas, etc, because she knows she has trouble concentrating when she has corn syrup. Other strong allergans in children can be soy, milk, wheat, nuts and chocolate. If sugar seems to be a problem, I would try to eliminate the corn syrup for a few weeks and see if it makes a difference. It's not easy, though very much worth it if you can avoid drugs through diet. The child is just plain mean and 30 minutes later, he is as sweet as only a child can be. This goes on over and over again, through the day. >>
