This message is for "silver" in response to his message asking for

"help with pain".

First off, work with your medical doctor. If you don't have one, it is very important

to seek out a specialist, probably a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon,

who can follow your course. From your message, I assume that surgery

is not a choice at this point, as your discs are "bulging" as opposed to

"herniated".

Second, has your doctor prescribed pain medication and muscle

relaxants? Quite often the pain is magnified by spasms in the

affected area, so if you can control the spasms the pain level

you are experiencing may decrease. Also, your MD may prescribe

physical therapy. This therapy is frequently successful for some people

with this type of injury, but not always. If you have access to a hot tub

or whirlpool, take advantage of it - can be very soothing.

Third, patience! This condition will not heal quickly. Often it

may require months to recover. Adequate rest is essential. NO lifting,

no activities that will over-stress the affected area.

Hot packs can be very soothing. You can make your own

with a sock filled with rice. Warm the pack briefly in the microwave

and place on the affected area.

Now, to the request for natural rubs, ointments, baths that may

help your pain. Warm baths with Epsom salts are very relaxing and

may help the spasms. When bathing with the salts, I would recommend

that you take your bath in the evening at bedtime. Epsom salts

are inexpensive and can be found most any place - pharmacies,

Wal-Mart, Walgreen's, dollar stores, grocery stores.

I have found a topical treatment that works for me. You put it on the affected area.

For me it's my feet; for you ,your back at the level of injury. I can't promise it will work for

you because we are all different, but it has certainly lowered my pain

level. If you would like to try it, send me an email and I will send you the info.

Wishing you a full return to health,

Cindy Duncan RN
