Chlorine Plants Among the Largest Sources of Mercury

 

Nine U.S. chlorine factories located primarily in the Midwest and Southeast

have been identified as some of the largest and " long overlooked " sources of

mercury, according to a report issued by Oceana, an environmental group. So much

so, those nine plants could be releasing as much, or more, mercury than the

entire output of this nation's power companies COMBINED!

Although recent efforts to control emissions in the United States have

largely been focused on coal-fired mercury plants, the chlorine industry, in

addition to the Environmental Protection Agency, has admitted its sizable role

in

mercury pollution. That's very little consolation, considering these factories

each reported emitting an average of almost 1,100 pounds of mercury into the air

in 2002, FIVE TIMES the output of the average power plant, according to the

report. In fact, eight of the nine plants rank among the nation's top 25

companies in reported mercury emissions.

Even scarier, the actual amount of mercury emissions could be much higher and

is largely unknown because many tons are unaccounted for at the chlorine

plants every year. No wonder most all fish are unsafe to eat anywhere.

The hidden health danger that's not discussed in the study: Chlorine is the

primary chemical in the making of Splenda, the " sweet poison " that taints many

processed foods.

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern

and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving

distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the

CDC: Go Get Your Flu Shots!

 

 

You may recall a story I posted last month about the cooling demand for the

flu vaccine. Well folks, yesterday the CDC finally threw " in the towel, " so to

speak.

Now, they're encourage anyone and everyone to get a flu shot, or the vaccines

go to waste and manufacturers like Chiron , Aventis-Pasteur and MedImmune

won't make as many for the next flu season. Makes about as much sense as telling

you to spend money you don't have for something you can't afford. But many

people do it anyway every day without considering the larger consequences.

Those " consequences " can be particularly huge for the health of you and your

Mum in windows row with council

THE mother of a three-year-old autistic boy claims she's living a nightmare

because she cannot stop her son climbing through the windows of her council

home.

Claire Faulkner, of Coed Eva, Cwmbran, claims officers have told her the only

way to solve the problem is to put her name down on the transfer list for a

more suitable property.

" Austic children do not handle change very well, and the upheaval of a move

would pose major problems, plus we'd have to wait for something to come up

anyway, " said Mrs Faulkner, 27.

She also claims her son Kian's asthma is seriously aggravated by an ongoing

condensation problem in her house in Tolpath.

" I have had officers round to look at the windows and I have been told there

is nothing that can be done because the council doesn't have the money, " she

said.

The mother of two claims one officer told her to send a doctor's note to the

housing department, but she said this has had no effect.

She added: " All you have to do is push a button and the window opens. If he

gets out he'll be off within seconds.

" It's a nightmare, I am terrified of him getting out and running on to the

road. I can't watch him every single minute of the day - it's not possible. "

Kian also regularly throws objects at the windows.

Mrs Faulkner and her husband, Colin, asked the council to fit lockable

double-glazing which Kian cannot open, but she claims council officers told her

the

rest of the street would have to be fitted with the same windows, which the

council cannot afford.

But Mrs Faulkner claims her social worker is backing her case for new windows

to be fitted.

A Torfaen council spokesman said officers were still looking at Mrs

Faulkner's case.

He added: " The council is sending an offer today to make improvements which

will address the recent recommendations regarding condensation and safety. "

An autistic sibling teaches patience

Sara Kang is a sophomore at John Bowne High School in Flushing.

When I was little, I didn't know that my brother had autism. I just thought

he had a problem. I didn't understand why he was like that, but I was angry at

him. Not just at him, but at the kids who ridiculed him and made fun of him.

Some kids made fun of him not just because he wasn't normal, but because of his

Asian heritage. I wanted to hurt them so that they could get a taste of the

pain that I went through.

 

Usually, siblings of autistic children don't openly talk about their pain,

but somehow I was able to. My mom and I had a lot of talks about life and stuff

like that. My brother's autism made me and my mom closer. My dad and I never

really talked about it but we expressed our emotions in the same way. My

brother and I grew really close over the years. Even though he is autistic, we

have

a normal relationship.

 

I still wanted to know what having a normal sibling was like, but my brother

taught me lessons about life and how to deal with it. Because of him, I

learned patience and understanding. I saw the good things in my life and not

just

the bad. Even though he has autism, at least he is able to act like a normal

kid. He likes to play and annoy me just like any other younger brother. He loves

to laugh, and I am filled with happiness when I am the one who makes him

laugh.
