Guest guest
Dear friends, We all know the biggest killer of modern world and we get attacked by it day in and out without knowing that we have a solution right in our own breaths. Stress is our emotional reaction to any given thought. We have very little control over our thoughts. If we are not careful with the sharp weapon called our " Mind " we could very well be subjected to its destructive effects rather than constructive ones. That's what actually happens in most psycho-somatic illnesses and stress related disorders. How do we know that we are stressed? The commonest symptom of mild stress could be changes in appetite (over or under-eating), disturbed and un-refreshing sleep, irritability and occasional emotional outbursts, listlessness, nervousness, lack of interest in work, difficulty in concentration and forgetfulness. Many a times it is not the mind but our body that gets affected first. Unexplained backache, repeated headaches, tendency to repeated cold , cough and throat infection are some of the most common problems directly related to the stress. Of course, we all know about hypertension, cardiac problems, acidity, diabetes and hoards of other psychosomatic illnesses which are directly related to the stress. It is amazing how easily we ignore our own system to the point of break-down while trying to take care of every thing. Even our vehicle gets much better treatment and services at times than our physical body! Though it is imperative to go to the root cause of the stress but it is not always practical. Because when we are stressed out our thinking capacity becomes slightly stunted. Meditation under these circumstances is also a futile effort. So what do we do? Just change the way you breathe. Don't believe me? Try the following:- Try and remember an incidence when you felt extremely angry or disturbed. Now close your eyes and re-live those moments for some time….. Feel the emotions that you felt at that time. Observe the effect on your body now. Also observe the changes in your breathing pattern. Simply observe your breath……. Now regulate your breath…… Count slowly 1-2-3-4- while breathing in and again count 1-2-3-4- while breathing out. Take an equal quantity of breath in and take equal quantity of breath out. Continue just for 5-7 such breaths and notice the difference in your state of relaxation. Now try and think of the same incidence that disturbed you before this breathing exercise and you will that this time it will fail to make any significant negative impact on your body. Isn't it amazing? Our emotions directly affect our breathing pattern and the reverse is also true. The moment we change our breathing pattern suddenly we start feeling different. Our Yogis knew these techniques very well. Patanjali has described it beautifully in his famous book, Yogsutra. Feeling tired and lethargic by now? Do rapid and fast breathing and see how refreshed you feel! Dr. Neeta Pandya, [b.H.M.S.] I am a founder member of Mumbai based organization International Academy Of Life.
