Guest guest
I wrote this up once but I think I didn't send it properly, if this isn't the case I apolegize for the repeat. Swami Sita of the Grass Valley Sivanada ashram said, " When you feel the goverment is evil and the world is going down the problem isn't the goverment is bad, it's that you ate a piece of chocolate cake the night before. " When a close friend's bipolar symptons got much worse we embarked on researching what others have found about natural treatments. One reoccurring theme was changing the food and diet and increasing the nutrients absorbed by the body. Brain chemistry is very complicated and it doesn't take much of a nutritional deficiency to alter it's function. Lot of things can affect nutrient absorption, ranging from food allergies to mucoid plaque linings along the intestines to parasites and beyond. If the brain isn't being fed properly it won't work properly. Frequently, a change in diet made for big differences in the way a person thinks and feels. Immediate action when we found he was near suicidal, curled up in a ball in his apartment whenever he wasn't working, was to provide some intervention. We made sure he started eating good wholesome food (loads of organic produce) and visiting a lot as an excuse to do that. He was willing to try medicinal nervine teas, St John'swort and lemon balm worked quite well to help level him out. WARNING:Some folks report mixing St John'swort with certain antidepressents can mess you up big time, so if you're friend is on some don't give him that. We had him make and keep a chart of how he felt and everything he ate during the day for a month. We started seeing trends and continued for 3 months. Thus we cued in on 3 major food allergies, caffein, chocolate, and ice cream. Any one of those 3 things would make him crash and he would spend days recovering. The problem was he would crash, then go to those same substances to get a boost which would obviously sustain the depression or feed the manic episode. Once he cut those 3 things out there was a leap upward in how he felt. I am of the opinion he also had a wheat/gluten allergy. The later can serously affect the absorption of nutrients through the intestines as can other allergies. In trying to protect itself from the allergin, the body pumps out more mucous to line the intestines. This cuts down on the contact with the allergin, but also funks up your digestion of other stuff. Over time this mucoid plaque can build up. Then your body gets even less of the nutrients it needs and the person's behavior gets more bizarre... While this process of observation was going on, he was willing to do dietary changes moving away from the standard American processed crap to more nutritious, mostly organic diet incorportating lots of produce. This took a long time, it isn't done overnight. Over time he found the better he ate the better he felt so in addition to avoiding those things that were directly triggering a crash he was systematically increasing the food value of what he ate. He also ate more fish, especially salmon, to increase the Omega 3s he was getting (lab boys have found links between depression and low omega 3). He maintained the nervine teas while this slow process was happening. Eventually he found Bach Flower Essences. Turns out mustard FE fit him to a T. Taking that at the first signs of one of his black moods would lesson the severity and eventually head off entirely the cycle of dysfunctional thinking. There was another fe he took to that he said worked good. During this time he also did Hulda Clark parasite cleanse. Her theory is sometimes parasites will get into different body symptons and cause different diseases. So, liver flukes or something similiar can end up the brain and cause mental dysfunctions. I took him a zapper and the antisparasite tinctures called for and we had fun hooking him up to the little electronic box (homemade, under $25) that was suppose to kill off the body parasites. Turned out to be quite fun especially when others were there, " Dude, check this out. We're going to nuke C----'s brain parasites. " " That's awesome, like StarTrek. " " Yeah, it's borg technology, Resistence is futile. Your nutrients will be assimulated. " Did it work? After 4 days he passed some sort of parasitical worms in his stools. Just as importantly he knew his friends were there supporting him. After the parasite cleanse he did a liver/gallbladder flush and 4 gallstones came out along with a bunch of other gook. He felt much better after both the deworming and the liver flush. By this time he was clearheaded most of the time. I wanted him to try a master cleanse to flush the sludge out of the system (the mucoid plaque that lines the intestines) but he hasn't tried it yet. Doing so would help the body to absorp more nutrients. We also sent him to a reiki master and got him taking yoga class. Pranayama alternative nostril breathing exercises helped him to make it through the depressed states with some degree of dignity. After a while he could identify at what stage in the depression he was in by what series of thoughts were going on and then be a witness to the drama as it unfolded. It helped him to maintain some degree of amused detachment as his mind played it's tricks. So, his bipolar symptons were coming a lot from his food allergies and a poor (normal) diet. By eliminating the allergins and helping eat better food along with a bunch of cleanses helped to cure him of what ailed him. He hasn't had an attack for over two months now after 6 to 8 months of steady improvement and knows usually mustard flower essence is there if it starts to happen. Hope this experience helps someone else. When a close friend or loved one goes into black mode or into manic excited mode in front of your eyes it is difficult to deal with. Thankfully, we caught this one before it got so serious as to require medication. Once that happens, it can get far trickier.

Son Thank you Doctor, I'm not a health care practioner, at the time I was a produce clerk in a health food store. I read a lot and then experiment to see if it works. Our circle of friends who worked together on this were mostly yoga/meditation/spiritual types who had a good sense of awareness and lots of active compassion. His partner deserved the big credit, she lived with him through his cyclic yoyoing and did a lot to help coordinate our efforts making our interventions seem less intrusive and more like a spontaneous visit.
