Community is vitally important to me and yet I meet people all the time that seek to isolate themselves. Of course, some use the Internet as a refuge from face-to-face conversation. I see it as a supplement, a way to access minds and spirits that I would not find otherwise. I have belonged to some for years. Others don't seem to " fit " and I leave quietly after a short time. Periodically, I search for new groups using different search terms. I've been pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of folks posting and topics that we're exploring on Digna-Petamus. We work to keep negativity to a minimum and I hope that will encourage people to feel more free to share ideas. I've been on lists where a vocal minority will literally pelt a newcomer with negativity if the newcomer expresses any idea that they, the longer term members, don't agree with. It has a rather chilling effect on conversation and tends to drive people away. Some people have more of a need to communicate. I have a great need to learn new things, to be exposed to new ideas. The basis of the "lucifer principle" is that all life is in competition with other life. Every creature lives on consuming other creatures. In looking at it in a certain way, life seems like a great big blood bath, and a great quote from Bloom is that "Mother Nature is a bloody b*tch" (anyone who's offended, relax, I'm a nature worshiping tree hugger), and this violence and conflict goes on up into humans in competition with each other. Therefore, what we call evil (lucifer) is simply our interpretation of the ugly things that come about because of the very nature of existence. Competition is between groups, with those you consider to be "other". You don't strike out seriously against those you consider to be in your group, and when there is a threat, the group tends to coalesce closer together to protect itself against that threat. In the human denominator, this is most evident on the grand scale between races, ethnicities, and nationalities. We can call it differing values. We can call it ethics or principles or safety or what have you- but what it comes down to in the grand scheme of things is that everybody wants their basic needs met... and then some. And they often get that done by way of group dynamics. Everyone, in general, wants a bigger piece of the pie. They want their group to be dominant, like the biggest chicken in the barnyard. And those who are dominant want to stay that way even if it means beating the others up. It's not an isolated human trait to fight your neighbor-- it's all over the animal kingdom. Apes actually have hunting parties. They will kill each other, in what is very much like our wars on a small scale. Ants wage war on other ant piles. To exist, every being has to eat, so every being has to kill, be it plants and/or animals. Think of it as nature's way to keep creatures on their toes, and always in the progress of becoming stronger, smarter, and faster. So wouldn't it be a beautiful day when we realize that other humans aren't all that "other", and the earth and universe itself is an integral part of ourselves? I think that that kind of developing awareness, more so than any kind of ingrained ethics or moral principles, is what will be necessary to stop us from killing each other & destroying our world.
