The need for conversation?

Do you find yourself craving intelligent conversation? A need to

connect with folks that share your interests?

A friend and I were talking about this the other day, how he'd joined

our local singles group not to meet women but because it was a way to

engage in intelligent conversation. He has a very high IQ, he's a

meteorologist, and he said that he lives a pretty solitary and

indepenedent existence but finds himself needing conversation.

I know humans are social animals. In a way, we're a lot like dogs who

are " pack " animals. They need to be part of a pack. A dog on it's own

isn't a very happy camper.

What do the rest of you think about this? Is that why poor Tom Hanks'

character started talking to the volleyball when stranded on the

deserted island in CASTAWAY?

Hi Anna,

Absolutely! Thank you for the link, and I have joined this group. I

was amazed to see how very active it is and how fascinating the posts

seem to be.

A since of community is vitally important to me, and thanks to the

internet, that community can now be extended globally.

Thank you again Anna,

I agree. Where are you living? I am in Brasil where People assume their

social nature.

I also think tha humans are similar to cells, just in a diferent dimension.

Do you know that 140milion cells die everyday in our body?

They need food and oxygen like us...They are not aware of our existence and

we are made of them...

Do you think we are in the same position? Do we belong to a body we are not

aware of?

Dear Luis,

Perhaps we live and move and have our being in the Body of God. Yet, some know of this and have fully realized that which lies within themselves and that which lies within God. Are you interested in awakening to more of this, even in Brazil. I have friends there who hold classes. Visit www.eckankar.org and explore for yourself. It is true that the physical plane, the most peripheral of God's worlds, parallels the abode within which God dwells, the Ocean of Love and Mercy. That which is realized as truth here in this world is but the end sequence of that which is awakened in the Heart of God.

Dear Stephen,

Thank you for your email. We may belong to the body of God. That does not change our position because we do not have the minimum idea of who He is...As our cells do not have the idea of who we are...I assume...

My way to discover Life is through Knowlewdge. For me Science is a long talk with God...I ignore if cells of animals and plants make science their own way...Taking into acount their capacity for survival I am inclined to believe that...

I Know well the ocean...It has everything in it: peace, beauty, harmony, and tempest, war for survival, cruel atrocities(from the human standpoint), powerfull destructive mechanisms...There is no place for beliefs or guidelines other the ones that are based on pragmatic knowledge...Science,Art, Culture are the ways to God I know...

I am Portuguese and know very well Minnesota and Minneapolis...Good Country and Good People...I hope they remain the same way...In Brasil and Portugal most people see bush as a kind of an hitlerian ruler: Geneva Convention ignored, atrocities, arbitrary decisions that already killed and arrested so many People... Prisons without trial...Is he in the XI century and trying to put you there? We are in the XXI in most parts of the Wordl...Are Americans aware of that? You still have a free press, after all...Why then, bush has so many supporters?...I love one of your proverbs: "All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win the wordl is for enough good men to do nothing"...What are they doing?...

Dear Luis,

I am not of this world although I live in it. Neither gender, color, religion or nationality define who I am. I am Soul, an atom structure within the Body of God. I have left this body on many occasion and moved into other worlds or even into the past or future of my life. There are those who have had realization of worlds far beyond this one and have learned how to enter them freely in life and thus hold no fear of what man calls death.

The founding fathers of the USA determined that there must of necessity be a separation between the church and the state. Yet, in all times, there are religious zealots who oftentimes see the world through a dichotomous perspective. The President of the USA is one such person. Constrained somewhat by his political aspirations, he nonetheless holds the world view that there is good and evil and the latter is all that he excludes from the former. I place little attention on this other than what is required to serve inwardly in my birthplace. Thus, I take no issue with your comments about my country. Although I love it, I also see it for what it is. Yet, mark my words, unbeknownst to most, it is the center of spirituality on this planet.

Much Love in Spirit,

About the need for conversation, yes, I agree, humans are very social creatures. I even think it's a biological need that developed by evolution. There is a great book I read called the Lucifer Principle by Howard Bloom that likens social development to ecological evolution. It compares social groups to organisms at the cellular level, both working as a collective whole, as you're speaking of- So I highly recommend it for a very thought-provoking as well as entertaining book.

One idea that stuck with me is that just as cells in your body that are no longer necessary or are damaged will stop receiving communication & nutrients till they die, human beings who feel useless and disconnected become depressed and further isolate themselves. It's like the higher "organism" level of social groups has its own psychological/biological way (depression & suicide) of eliminating those that are no longer a part of it. So in essence, we need connections with other people in order to survive & thrive.

I would also say that I think that those few who can do well outside of human interactions, those who, say, move to the mountains away from 'civilization', have developed their connection instead with the earth itself- so they have an aweareness of a greater connectedness beyond that of the social network (and this is very different from sociopaths who isolate themselves & then strike out at the greater society)

thanks for the thoughts,

rachel

Dear Stephen,

I appreciate your answer. I have a profound admiration for your Founding Fathers, particularly Thomas Jefferson.

For the same reasons, I have a total misregard for bush and all other liers and terrorists that rule the wordl.

It seems to me you have significant message...In a authentic way(sincere, honest, truly) overcome our instinct for survival and accept death for what it is: An essential part of Life, without which Life would be impossible. Can you let me know how do you make it?

I must confess that for me, the image of death is always bitter, at least...I love Life...Nature, The Ocean, Music, Good People, beautiful Women, joy and Love...If it is weakness...To be afraid of loosing all that, I am weak...On the other hand I have the perspective that I am an infinitesimal part of a much larger process that I am firmly ignorant about...And that I should think that death must be accepted and that I should overcome my instinct for survival and correspondent emotions.

My emotions are greater than my thoughts...It seems you are able to do it, which is great!.. How?

How is Minneapolis? Still beautiful, with all those lakes?...

Dear Luis,

May I acknowledge the humility it takes to ask a heartfelt question. Each man who has met the challenges of his own life has become better for it. Wisdom comes from meeting life on its own terms and gracefully adjusting as required. Men learn from observing as well the experiences of another. Oftentimes, the reading of a book written by one whose steps have taken him to the mountain of his dreams allows for an easier climb to the top of one's own. May I suggest a book to you which has given much to me by he who wrote it and experienced the low and high points of his life contained within its pages. "Autobiography of a Modern Day Prophet" by Harold Klemp is such a book. I cannot recommend it without mentioning that the reading of its pages will without question transform your life. It has mine.

Minneapolis is lovely. I visit once a year in October. There is a seminar I attend with many from all over the world. Perhaps we will meet there someday. There are those who are your countrymen who attend as well.

RE: The need for conversation?

Much Love in Spirit,

Stephen
