Guest guest
Do you think it could be caused by using the mouse - sort of a carpal tunnel thing? You might try taking a break from using the mouse with that hand and see what happens. Or at least find a different way to do it. A while back I was having tingling in my hand that I use the mouse with. When I provided support for my forearm, the problem went away. Guest guest
There are lots of factors that could affect rusty, if it isn't tendonitis.. i thought the same as you, linda, when i read it, but as there's already the tendonitis diagnosis, i didn't say anything because i don't know anything about that. That said, i've got carpal tunnel - so i can tell you what can help. If you're typing at work, identify the problem and see if they will get you and ergonomic keyboard. This is basically one with the 'keypad' split up the middle - the left hand keys on one side, the right on the other. The thing with a 'normal' keyboard is that it isn't angled in a way that is at all comfortable for most people to type. Take a look at the keyboard in front of you - are you having to hold your hands at an unacceptable horizontal angle to type at it? If so, you could probably benefit from an ergonomic keyboard. Since i've had mine, much of the pain and numbness in my wrist and arms has gone away. Not all of it, sadly, but its a big start. The mouse can be a major problem. If you're using a pc, you can change the fingers you use to 'click' your mouse. This is particularly useful if you experience pain in those fingers (i did, quite a lot). Go into 'control panel', 'mouse' and then, if there are several choices, click 'buttons'. It should then allow you to change things over. You can get mouse-mats with wrist-rests. These work best when you're actually using it properly. You should, really, have your hand 'floating' above the mouse, rather than slumped on the table, angled over the top of your mouse. A wrist rest can help, but can also encourage 'slumping'. As i type this, i notice i'm slumping, btw.. Other things that affect you are the height of your chair, and the height of your monitor - the top of your monitor should be about two finger-widths below eye level. If its too low, or too high, you'll strain your neck. There are a whole number of factors you can look into. If you work for a large company, they should provide work-station assessments. If they don't, perhaps its time to encourage them to start Linda, i'm not sure if we've had the same thing as rusty. What you had sounds similar to what i had - except i got some pain in the hand as well. Some of mine has gone away, but i still have to watch how much typing i'm doing. I've been recommended comfrey cream for the muscle-ache typing can cause. I tried it, but it didn't change my world much. For how long does one need to use it, anyone? Also, any alternative suggestions would be great - particularly suggestions that don't involve spending lots of money on expensive remedies. I should probably do my yoga exercises more, because they're supposed to help. Rusty, i didn't mean to hi-jack your question. I hope you get some luck with the pain, and that what i said might have been of some use to you. if not, well maybe it was of some use to someone else! I'd give that acupuncture a few tries - it can take a while to work - but if you've decided it isn't for you, you probably know best. Massage can help, too. All this pain is probably making you very tense. The tension, in turn, will cause more pain. Let me know if you manage to sort it out! Good luck.. Cheers Ian P.s. i apologise for the erratic punctuation in this post. I'm typing it in outlook, which appears to have a built-in autocorrect which i've turned off about 89 times, and which keeps switching itself back on. Oh, the joys of technology.. Guest guest
Hi Rusty, I experience much the same as you describe and am told my pain is due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is further compounded in my case by an injury incurred during my service in the Marines that was misdiagnosed as a sprain but later analysis of xrays taken show that the wrist was either fractured or broken and wasn't set so it didn't heal properly. My symptoms range from loss of tactile sensation in the finger tips (a bad thing for a musician) to what I descibe as an ice pick being inserted in the elbow. I occasionally have the pain in the shoulder as well. I've found relief from the pain by wearing a wrist brace at night that keeps the hand/wrist in the proper position to reduce impingement on the nerves in that area. While I have used glucosamine in the past, I now use an all natural supplement that contains a precursor to glucosamine. This allows the body to recognise and use what it needs to allow healing and not have to process the unused portion out of the body thereby freeing those resources for other needs. I'd also add that I'm almost 42 years now, work out with heavy weights and cardio 4-6 times per week and have no pain other that the previous injury. While I am considering surgery, I'd caution you to find someone experienced in this area as I have heard from people on both extremes who've reported either an improvement or a worsening of the condition. Should you consider surgery, the supplements I use also speed healing and should be a consideration for you. I'd be glad to send you more info if you care to have a look. I hope this has been helpful.
