High Cholosterol...

Hi everyone,

I used to eat oatmeal every single day for over a year, and enjoyed

cholosteral points of about 115. Lately, because of getting disgusted

with the taste of oatmeal, I have been eating lots of eggs. Now my

Dr. took a blood test Friday, and called to tell me my Cholosterol

count is 212. Does anyone know anything I can do to lower it? I don't

eat many fried foods, and I don't even know if this is overly high...

Thanks in advance for any info on this problem.

Your doctor should have told you whether or not it was overly high.

According to my doctor, anything over 200 is high.

I think the best thing to do is cut back on animal-based foods and

get more exercise. Good luck.

The overall cholestorol count is a nearly useless number. What is far more important is the individual LDL, HDL, and Triglyceride levels. If the Triglycerides are low and the LDL/HDL RATIO is low, then that is less to worry about, even if the overall count is high.

While it is true that an overall count is not good... there are varying degrees of concern depending on the ratio.

Vitamin E prevents the oxidation of the cholestorol. It is only when the cholesterol oxidizes that it becomes sticky and therefore dangerous.

Best things to do are:

#`1 Eliminate as much as possible ALL partially hydrogenated fats and oils from your diet. These are extremely bad for you and your cholesterol levels. They are used in nearly all store-bought processed foods, for the sole purpose of extending shelf life. Simple rule of thumb... if it doesn't rot quickly, it isn't food.

#2 Cook using olive oil, grapeseed oil, or other high oleic oil. Avoid shortenings... especially animal shortening (lard).

#3 I would also recommend some EFA supplements such as Fish oil, Evening Primrose Oil, DHA, Borage Oil, Flax Seed Oil, etc.

Thanks for the explanation, Larry. Too many doctors don't bother

telling patients any of this.

That's true... in many cases they will tell you if you ask. The problem is that they never teach you the questions to ask. :o)
